USA Women's U20 Tryouts Set to Begin

By Brian Logue | Photo by Nick Ieradi

SPARKS, Md. A little less than four years ago, Kelly Amonte Hiller won a world championship on the lacrosse field — this time as a coach.

Following a stunning loss to Canada in the 2015 World Lacrosse Women’s U19 Championship, Amonte Hiller, a two-time gold medalist as a player, brought home the world championship to the United States in 2019. She assembled one of the most dominant U.S. teams ever and beat Canada on its home turf in Peterborough, Ontario.

On Friday, Amonte Hiller takes the first step in taking another crack at gold. Ninety-eight of the nation’s top players come to USA Lacrosse headquarters to begin the tryout process for the team that will ultimately represent the United States in the 2024 World Lacrosse Women’s U20 Championship in Hong Kong, China.

There will be some familiarity to 2019 on Amonte Hiller’s staff as Ann Elliott Whidden (Colorado head coach) returns as an assistant coach and Angela McMahon (Deerfield Academy Associate AD/Head Coach), an assistant coach at the last championship, serves as manager. Tim McCormack, a former assistant to Amonte Hiller at Northwestern and now the head coach at Johns Hopkins, and Michelle Tumolo, a gold-medal USA player now serving as the head coach at Army are the newcomers.

One notable change from 2019 will be the experience level of the players. World Lacrosse has raised the age grouping for its junior championship from U19 to U20, meaning that a significant portion of the tryout pool will already have a least one year of college experience. That’s a significant change from 2015, when USA Lacrosse had internal rules that didn’t allow players with college experience to participate in the world championship, let alone the tryout portion a year earlier.

The net result is Amonte Hiller and her staff will be evaluating players with proven track records, but she also won’t be afraid to look at younger players. The 2019 team included three players that still had a year of high school lacrosse to play after the world championship — Leah Holmes, Belle Smith and Caitlyn Wurzburger — and the trio all played key roles in helping the U.S. win the world championship.

Among some of the notable names in the tryout pool:

  • Emma LoPinto, an IWLCA second-team All-American from Florida, who was tied for 14th in the country with 90 points scored and has 187 points after two college lacrosse seasons.

  • Camryn Callaghan, Cincinnati and Bridgid Duffy, Army: The duo tied for the national lead among freshmen with 56 goals scored in 2023. Callaghan was the American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year. Duffy was the Patriot League Freshman of the Year and a second team All-American by USA Lacrosse Magazine.

  • Eight players from the ACC All-Freshman team: Shea Dolce (Boston College), Sofia Chepenik (Clemson, now signed with South Florida), Sarah Gresham (Virginia Tech), Kaleigh Harden (North Carolina), Abigail Lyons (Notre Dame), Paris Massarracchia (Clemson), Ella Rishko (Virginia Tech) and Jocelyn Torres (Virginia Tech).

  • Northwestern’s Madison Taylor, the Big Ten Freshman of the Year, was the fourth-leading scorer (53g, 17a) for the national champion Wildcats.

  • Kori Edmondson, a second-team All-Big Ten selection along with Taylor, who ranked second for Maryland with 41 goals scored.

  • Three USA Lacrosse Magazine Regional High School Players of the Year — Charlotte Corkins (West), Lindsey Devir (Mid-Atlantic) and Chloe Humphrey (Northeast) and are in the tryout pool although Corkins will not participate due to injury. All three are among the 37 players in the tryout pool who have played for USA Select teams in USA Lacrosse’s National Team Development Program and Humphrey was the USA Lacrosse Magazine National High School Player of the Year in 2023.

Two additions to the player pool from the initial tryout announcement are Maisy Clevenger, an incoming freshman at Maryland, and Sydney Smith, a defender who just completed her freshman year at Duke.

Historically, the U.S. U19 women won five of the seven world championships conducted by World Lacrosse from 1995 through 2019.

The U.S. women’s national teams train and play using best-in-class products from Nike Lacrosse (apparel and footwear), Enovis (formerly DJO - sports bracing) and game-changing, high-performance equipment from Cascade/Maverik, Gait Lacrosse and STX.

In addition to these partners, Gatorade, MedStar Health, National Center for Safety Initiatives and Stryker are official sponsors of the U.S. national team program. Team training is also aided by products from Athletic Republic.
