SPARKS, Md. — It’s been over 18 months since the last time that U.S. women’s national team head coach Jenny Levy got to work with her team in person due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the wait is finally coming to an end.
Levy and her staff will welcome 61 of the nation’s top women’s lacrosse players to a tryout camp from June 9-11, 2021 at USA Lacrosse headquarters in Sparks, Md.
“We look forward to welcoming in a talented group of players to kick off our quest for 2022 World Championship gold,” said Levy, whose No. 1-ranked North Carolina women’s team will host Stony Brook (coached by U.S. team assistant coach Joe Spallina) on Saturday in the NCAA quarterfinals. “It has been a long 18 months since we have been together as a program and I know everyone is looking forward to getting back out on the field in the red, white and blue.”
Included among the 61 players are nine gold medalists from the 2017 U.S. team — Becca Block, Kristen Carr, Taylor Cummings, Meg Douty, Gussie Johns, Marie McCool, Alice Mercer, Kayla Treanor and Michelle Tumolo — but also number of collegiate players new to the U.S. team program. The tryout pool will also include three gold medalists from the 2019 U.S. U19 team — Sophia DiCenso, Izzy Scane and Belle Smith — who will be getting their first experience with the U.S. senior team.
The event is closed to the general public, but a special livestream will be carried by Lax Sports Network on the evening on Thursday, June 10. The livestream will be hosted by former U.S. national team players Sheehan Stanwick Burch and Kristen Kjellman Marshall, giving lacrosse fans a behind-the-scenes and up-close look at the training process and a group of talented athletes.
“This event will have a mixture of players who have previously been on the U.S. training team in addition to collegiate players who have established themselves as standouts in conference and nationally during the 2021 season,” Levy said. “Picking up where we left off before COVID, June marks the continuation of our process to build a pool of players that we will use to select a training team of 36 and eventually a roster of 18 for the 2022 World Championship.”
USA Lacrosse will host the next World Lacrosse Women’s World Championship from June 29-July 9, 2022 at Towson University. It’s the first time the event has been held in the United States since 2005 and a record 30 nations are expected to compete.
