USA Lacrosse has named John Schlie of Mars, Pa. as winner of the organization’s 2024 Youth Coach of the Year Award, given to an outstanding youth coach who embodies the characteristics of an ideal coach, dedicating himself to the players and providing the best possible lacrosse experience for everyone.
The award winner is selected from among all nominations submitted and is an individual who thoroughly embodies the mission and vision of USA Lacrosse.
Schlie is a longtime volunteer with the Mars Youth Lacrosse Association (MYLA) who has been involved at every level, from board meetings to winter clinics. Most recently, he coached three of MYLA’s 5/6 boys’ teams to undefeated seasons in 2024.
“Whether it’s character or skill development, John leads the way and keeps us focused on what’s important,” said MYLA coaching director Michael Kelly. “His positive attitude, patience with the development process, and enthusiasm when engaging with players, coaches, and parents sets the bar for coaching expectations. Every player has a place on his team and is provided an opportunity to contribute and grow. And above all, he is attentive to making sure the kids have fun.”
In addition to his commitment to player development and mentorship, Schlie is always ready to also help his MYLA coaching colleagues. As a USA Lacrosse certified coach, his counsel is always appreciated.
“Almost every coach in MYLA has received instruction or feedback from John, and when we do, we know we are getting solid guidance,” Kelly said. “It’s a beautiful thing having someone you can rely on when you are struggling with a concept or an issue with your team. We all know we can go to John because he knows what he’s talking about. He’s an irreplaceable asset to our organization.”
