The Northeastern Huskies are back in the top 10 in this week’s WCLA Division I ranking following a big 14-7 win over league-rival Boston College Club. No. 8 Northeastern was the biggest mover of the week, jumping six spots. The Huskies began the season ranked fourth but slipped out of the top 10 two weeks ago.
Last week’s win over then-No. 4 BC is the third Top 20 victory of the season for the Huskies, who are building a strong resume for a potential third straight national tournament berth. Northeastern has a chance to further bolster its credentials with games against No. 10 Virginia Tech Club and No. 14 Florida Club this week.
Defending champion UCLA (9-0), idle this past week, maintains its hold on the top spot in the ranking. The Bruins are one of three undefeated teams that occupy the top three spots, followed by No. 2 Georgia (11-0) and No. 3 Clemson (9-0). Those two SWLL powerhouses meet on Friday in the biggest game of the week.
No. 17 Utah Valley, playing its second season in Division I, was the only newcomer in this week’s Top 20 following a 14-13 win at No. 11 Utah Club. The Wolverines have played one of the toughest schedules in the nation this season, with eight of their 10 games coming against Top 20 opponents, including UCLA, Georgia and Clemson.
In Division II, undefeated Cal State San Marcos (9-0) continues to hold the top spot and puts its undefeated record to the test this week with a visit to No. 11 Fullerton College.
Ole Miss (8-0) moved up one spot this week to number two, earning its highest-ever ranking. No. 3 Cal Poly ‘B’, No. 4 UC San Diego, and No. 5 Concordia round out the D-II top five.
Nearly 150 non-varsity collegiate teams comprise the WCLA and compete under the USA Lacrosse umbrella. The season will conclude with the top qualifiers competing in the national championship tournament in Wichita, Kansas, May 7-10.
