Humphrey, USA Select Women’s Teams Dominant in Brogden Cup

By Beth Ann Mayer

Much has been made about how this weekend marked a “changing of the guard” for the U.S. women’s national team with Taylor Cummings, Kayla Treanor and Alice Mercer retiring. The American senior team downed North Carolina in the Fall Classic, but the USA Select U16 and U18 teams showed the long-term future is also bright. Both teams topped their peers from the Haudenosaunee and Ontario Saturday, combining for a 4-0 record in the Brogden Cup.

USA U18 started its day with a 23-3 win over the Haudenosaunee and ended it by beating Ontario 20-3. Chloe Humphrey (Darien ‘23/North Carolina), one of the most touted players in her high school class, shined in both contests. The high school senior combined for 12 points on 10 goals and two assists.

Meanwhile, USA U16 downed the Haudenosaunee 22-2 and Ontario 17-5. Kaleigh Sommers (Fairfield Ludlowe/Stanford) tallied six points across two games.

The Americans never trailed, jumping out to a quick 3-0 advantage when Humphrey registered her first of the day with just under six minutes to play in the first quarter. The Haudenosaunee scored about two minutes later, but the Americans responded by scoring the next six to take a commanding 9-1 lead when Lena Doreen (Glenelg Country ‘23/Duke) scored at 7:05 of the second quarter. After a Haudenosaunee goal at 5:50 of the second quarter, the American defense locked down, blanking their opponent until there was 7:50 left in the fourth quarter.
