USA Lacrosse has named Adam White of Boston, Massachusetts as recipient of the organization’s 2021 Gerald J. Carroll, Jr. Exemplary Coaching Award. White has served as a coach and English teacher at St. Sebastian’s School in Needham, Mass. since 2013. After four years as an assistant coach, he took over as the boys’ varsity lacrosse head coach in 2017.
Established in 1994, the Gerald J. Carroll Award annually recognizes one high school boys' coach nationwide. The award measures the success of a coach not in victories but in the care and guidance he gives to the balanced development of the young men who play the game.
White, a former collegiate player and team captain at Dartmouth College, was presented with the Carroll Award prior to a recent St. Sebastian’s home game, with over 50 alumni and friends on hand for the ceremony.
“I’m honored to win the Gerry Carroll award,” White said, “and I’m proud to accept it on behalf of the whole Seb’s community. We have an amazing coaching staff, and we all love working with our players because our players love going to Seb’s and playing lacrosse here.”
Among the letters of support submitted on White’s behalf, several noted his fierce commitment and dedication to the development of the young men on his teams. “Coach White always imparts the life lessons of commitment, honor, and hard work to all aspects of their lives,” wrote one supporter. “He imparts all the right lessons in shaping the character of these young men.”
In addition to winning two Independent School League (ISL) championships during White’s tenure as head coach, St. Sebastian’s has consistently been ranked among the nation’s top teams. Additionally, White is the co-founder of the Gameday Nutrition program, a project designed in collaboration with the Tufts School of Nutrition to train senior players on the team to help instruct Harlem Lacrosse middle schoolers on the benefits of healthy eating.
“On behalf of the Carroll family and the award committee, I want to congratulate Coach White on winning the Gerald J. Carroll, Jr. Exemplary Coaching Award,” said Brian Carroll, one of Gerald’s sons and a member of the award’s selection committee. “Each year the committee reviews a number of nominations from around the country, and Coach White was this year’s clear front runner. It is our pleasure to present him with the award.”
