Dick Edell

Dick Edell was one of the most respected college coaches of all-time. At the time of his induction he ranked fifth among varsity college coaches with 282 career victories and his 17 NCAA Division I tournament appearances ranked second all-time.

Edell played lacrosse at Towson and was a head coach at the University of Baltimore (1973-76), Army (1977-1983) and Maryland (1984-2001).

He retired in 2001 after 29 years as a collegiate head coach, with a career record of 282-123. Edell was a two-time USILA national coach of the year, winning the award in 1978 with Army and in 1995 at Maryland. He was also a three-time winner of the ACC's Coach of the Year award (1989, 1992, 1998). Edell led Maryland to the NCAA championship game in 1995, 1997 and 1998, and at the time of his retirement, he was the all-time winningest coach in ACC history with 171 wins.

Edell was a 1967 graduate of Towson State, where he was a two-time All-American and earned a degree in physical education. He earned his master's degree in education from Western Maryland in 1970 and another master's degree in science from the University of Baltimore in 1976.

He broke into the coaching profession in 1968 as the freshman coach at Towson and after two years with the Tigers, Edell spent three years at Baltimore's Calvert Hall High School, where the Cardinals were crowned MSA champions in 1971 and 1973. 

Edell was previously inducted into the US Lacrosse Potomac Chapter and University of Maryland halls of fame.

He passed away on May 2, 2018.
