SPARKS, Md. — Kelly Amonte Hiller, head coach of the 2024 U.S. Women’s U20 National team, has named her staff. The U.S. team will compete in the 2024 World Lacrosse Women’s U20 Championship in Hong Kong, China next summer.
Serving on the staff will be Angela McMahon (manager), Tim McCormack (assistant coach), Michelle Tumolo (assistant coach) and Ann Elliott Whidden (assistant coach).
Amonte Hiller, the head women’s lacrosse coach at Northwestern University, previously led the U.S. women’s U19 team to a world championship in 2019 in Peterborough, Ontario, becoming the only person to win gold as a player and head coach with the U.S. national team program.
McMahon was an assistant coach on Amonte Hiller’s 2019 U.S. women’s U19 staff and has achieved success at every level of her career. She is in her first year as the associate athletic director and girls’ varsity lacrosse coach at Deerfield Academy (Mass.) after a sterling tenure as a college lacrosse coach. She won more than 200 games in her career as a college head coach, including a 192-35 record at UMass where she won 11 Atlantic 10 regular season championships and eight tournament titles. She led the 2016 UMass team to the NCAA quarterfinals. Before coaching, McMahon was a member of Amonte Hiller’s first team at Northwestern and helped the Wildcats reach the NCAA quarterfinals by her senior year in 2004.
McCormack is in his first season as the head women’s lacrosse coach at Johns Hopkins University and led the Blue Jays into the NCAA tournament. He came to Johns Hopkins from Arizona State where he was a two-time Pac-12 Coach of the Year and led the Sun Devils to a 26-17 record in three seasons. Prior to that role, he was an assistant to Amonte Hiller at Northwestern for six years, helping the Wildcats to six straight NCAA tournaments and a 2019 Big Ten championship. As a player, McCormack was a three-year starter and two-year captain as a goalie at the University of Massachusetts. During his senior year in 2012, the Minutemen went 15-1 and rose to No. 1 in the country for the first time in program history.
Tumolo, a longtime player in the U.S. women’s national team program, is the head coach at the United States Military Academy and led the Black Knights to its first NCAA tournament bid this season while earning Patriot League Coach of the Year honors. Tumolo has led Army to a 27-9 record in her first two seasons, including a school-record 15 wins this season. Before arriving at Army, Tumolo went 29-13 in three seasons at Wagner, leading the Seahawks to the 2019 NCAA tournament. She has also been an assistant coach at Oregon, Florida and Syracuse. Tumolo was a star player at Syracuse, finishing her career with 278 career points. She was a finalist for the Tewaaraton Award in 2012. Tumolo spent more than a decade playing in the U.S. national team program, highlighted by a World Cup championship in 2017 in Guildford, England when she scored 29 points (12g, 17a) in eight games to earn All-World honors and a gold medal at The World Games in Wroclaw, Poland.
Elliott Whidden, the head women’s lacrosse coach at the University of Colorado, was an assistant coach on Amonte Hiller’s 2019 U.S. women’s U19 staff. Whidden was hired as Colorado’s first varsity coach in 2012 and has led the program to a record of 109-59 and three NCAA tournament appearances. Whidden has a long connection with Amonte Hiller, winning three national championships as a player at Northwestern (2005-06-07), and then was a part of three more national championships (2009-11-12) as an assistant coach with the Wildcats before leaving to start up the Colorado program.
The staff has been reviewing player tryout applications and will extend invitations for the tryout later this month. The tryouts will take place from July 7-9, 2023 at USA Lacrosse headquarters in Sparks, Md.
Historically, the U.S. women won five of the seven world championships conducted by World Lacrosse from 1995 through 2019. World Lacrosse has since adjusted the age groupings for this championship up to the U20 age level.
