SPARKS, Md. — A record 80 girls’ lacrosse teams are registered to compete at the 2021 USA Lacrosse Youth Nationals. The event, featuring 13U, 14U and 15U age groupings, will be held at DE Turf in Frederica, Del. from July 13-14. The 14U and 15U championship games will be carried live on Lax Sports Network on July 14.
Another highlight to the event will be the presence of some of the nation’s elite senior level players. The U.S. national team program will have men’s and women’s team players training and holding exhibitions featuring the new World Lacrosse 6v6 discipline. It will be the first of three such opportunities for the U.S. team program to begin preparing for The World Games 2022, a multi-sport Olympic-style international competition that will be held in Birmingham, Ala.
“We’re excited to kick off the process for this new discipline,” said Skip Lichtfuss, director of the U.S. national team program. “This is a chance to work on strategies and tactics and begin evaluations for players and coaches to see who is suited and committed to this style of play.”
USA Lacrosse has partnered with STEPS Lacrosse and Top of the Bay Lacrosse to conduct this year’s USA Lacrosse Nationals. The 80 teams represent some of the top clubs in the country and have a broad geographic footprint with clubs from 16 states competing in the event.
“After such a challenging year, it is really exciting to see this collaboration come together fro the athletes to compete on a national stage against some of the best competition in the country,” said Charlie Shoulberg of STEPS Lacrosse. “The players deserve something to look forward to and for which to work hard. Pairing the U.S. national teams to this event adds an exciting layer of bringing the world’s elite players to the world’s future elite players. A big thank you to USA Lacrosse, Krystin Porcella of Top of the Bay Sports and David Gross of Lax Sports Network for the shared vision for this year’s USA Lacrosse Youth Nationals.”
The USA Lacrosse Youth Nationals trace their roots to the US Lacrosse U15 National Championships, first held in 2009. The event, which was held annually until the 2020 edition was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, has traditionally featured some of the biggest rising stars in the game. Andie Aldave, Sam Apuzzo, Mackenzie Burns, Cortney Fortunato, Samantha Giacolone, Miranda Ibello, Alice Mercer, Kerrigan Miller and Nikki Ortega are among the future U.S. U19 and senior training team members that have participated in the event.
DE Turf, the home for this year’s USA Lacrosse Youth Nationals, is the largest all-synthetic sports complex in the Mid-Atlantic, and was also home for this event in 2018. Conveniently located in Central Delaware, it’s just a short 30 miles from the Delaware beaches. Featuring 12 synthetic turf fields, five of which are lighted fields, and a championship field with seating for up to 700 spectators, this venue is a first-class sports destination venue to match the competition on its fields.
