Parents, Are You Asking the Right Questions?

As parents, we always want what’s best for our kids, and that certainly includes all aspects of their involvement in youth sports. In fact, just starting our kids in youth sports can be a daunting experience for some parents.

We ask ourselves if we have our kids in the right program, and perhaps, if they are even playing the right sport(s).  Do they have good coaches who are teaching them the proper fundamental skills, and good sportsmanship? Are they safe, and are they having fun?

As part of their 10th anniversary celebration, our friends at Project Play recently rolled out a new checklist for parents that helps address may of these questions. In fact, the checklist has 10 questions that you should be asking of yourself, your child, and the local programs to make sure that sport participation is a great experience for your youth athlete.

Launched in 2013, Project Play is the signature initiative of the Aspen Institute's Sports & Society Program, and seeks to develop, apply and share knowledge that builds healthy communities through sports. Project Play provides numerous resources to help make the youth and school sports landscape better for all participants.

Many of Project Play’s movement recommendations are consistent with USA Lacrosse’s Athlete Development Model, including some of the highlighted free play activities and physical literacy strategies.
