Four Newcomers Enter High School Girls' National Top 25

It was a volatile and unpredictable week in high school girls' lacrosse.

There are four newcomers in this week’s USA Lacrosse High School Girls' National Top 25. Westhampton (N.Y.) and Smithtown West (N.Y.) have emerged from the Northeast Region, Milton (Ga.) is back in from the South Region and St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes (Va.) debuts out of the Mid-Atlantic Region.

Westhampton and Smithtown West have each enjoyed 4-0 starts fueled by key wins over ranked teams. Westhampton edged former No. 3 New Canaan (Conn.) in overtime, and Smithtown West stopped previous No. 8 Sayville (N.Y.).

The ultra-competitive IAAM made a case for being as deep as ever when three of the conference’s top teams all suffered upsets. St. Paul’s (Md.), Archbishop Spalding (Md.) and Maryvale (Md.) all lost, and it was even worse for Spalding when it lost twice and also saw one of its top players suffer an injury in what’s already been an unfortunate season for injuries in the Mid-Atlantic Region.

Georgia power Milton lost a game to up-and-coming Good Counsel (Md.), but its win over a Potomac (Va.) team that started the season strong again puts the team in the national mix. Milton also beat Maryland stalwart Maryvale earlier this year. Its only other loss is to Cambridge (Ga.).

St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes returned from its West Coast trip that ended in a loss with a big triumph over Potomac (Va.). The Saints have lost just once in nine games, and they’ll have a chance to prove themselves further against some good Mid-Atlantic talent.

Sacred Heart Greenwich (Conn.) climbed to No. 6 with another good out-of-region win to remain unbeaten through six games. A healthier Stone Ridge (Md.) is also rising steadily, and the Gators come in at No. 9 after picking up their 10th win.
