Division III Women's Recap: Rollhaus Cashes In Triple-OT Winner for Denison

Denison is beginning to make it a habit of advancing to the NCAA Division III women’s quarterfinals. The Big Red didn’t coast into the Sweet 16 on Saturday, however.

Merrill Rollhaus scored twice in the fourth quarter — including the tying goal with 4:57 left in regulation — then netted the winner with 8 seconds left in the third overtime to left Denison to a 10-9 win over the University of Chicago.

Caroline O’Dea (14 saves) saved the first shot of triple overtime, then Chicago hit the post. Denison, after surviving defeat, got a ground ball from Mary Daniel to secure possession with a minute left.

A woman up on the final possession, Denison missed wide on a shot from Emma Repke, but Maddie Morrell was there to corral the ground ball. With her back toward the cage, she fed Rollhaus for the winner.

Denison played catch-up for most of the contest, trailing 3-0, 5-3 and 7-5 — not to mention 9-8 with 8:37 left in regulation.

The Big Red are the first to punch their ticket to the Sweet 16. The remaining second-round games will be played on Sunday, with winners moving on to join Denison in the quarterfinals.

Continue below to see the rest of Saturday’s results — first-round action from across the country — and look ahead to Sunday’s schedule.
