The final NESCAC-free weekend of the 2025 season has passed.
This week, a series of important one-goal games have made some teams wobble, but not fall down the USA Lacrosse Division III Men’s Top 20.
You’d be hard-pressed to find a contest with more gravitas this early than Salisbury’s narrow 12-11 triumph over last week’s party crashers, Gettysburg. Not only was it one of the better games of the weekend, but it shifted some opinions. Is Gettysburg a lot better than anyone thought? Is Salisbury less invincible than seasons past?
Speaking of vulnerability, St. John Fisher had a bit of a scare against longtime foe Ithaca, winning 12-11 in a game that could have easily knocked the Cardinals down a few spots had they lost.
Grove City’s super-competitive early slate has seen them fall to some of the best teams in the nation. This weekend, it was NCAA runners-up RIT, 17-11. Like York, a team that has also faced some higher-ranked squads this year and in years past, the Wolverines’ front-loaded schedule puts them on the back foot in terms of rankings but hardens them with lessons and rage for their in-conference tilts.
A battle near the bottom of the Top 20 saw Babson come from behind to overtake Union 11-9. While it’s a bit unfair to judge Union so harshly on its first result of the season, the loss to Babson is enough to escort them out of the Top 20 for now. Union, however, remains a team that is a few wins away from bursting the bubble.
Who should replace Union in the No. 20 spot? Stevenson’s win against Muhlenberg has a bit more weight to it despite losing to Christopher Newport 13-10 on Sunday. Denison’s 15-1 drubbing of John Carroll also has the Big Red in the conversation, but we’re early enough in the season to consider the untraditional unbeatens.
So, this week, the spot goes to Kenyon, which is now 4-0, with its best victory coming against Colorado College last weekend.
