Good morning. Here’s the latest from around the lacrosse world:
1. Who wants to be No. 1?
Apparently, this week it’s Notre Dame. For the fifth straight week, there will be a new No. 1 team in the Nike/USA Lacrosse NCAA Division I rankings following No. 2 Notre Dame’s 17-12 win over No. 1 Duke. Elsewhere in Division I this weekend, there were three overtime games in the Big Ten, Denver upset Villanova on Bill Tierney Day and more from The Post-Week Tailgate.
2. A near miss for the Irish.
It would have been a perfect weekend for the Notre Dame lacrosse teams, but Boston College came back from an 11-7 deficit to beat the Irish 12-11 in the opening game of a twinbill at Arlotta Stadium. Elsewhere in women’s lacrosse, the Ivy League remains confounding after Penn dominated Yale and Syracuse just keeps on rolling. Read more in The Sunday Slide.
3. Equipment controversy in Columbus.
One of the biggest stories of the weekend came when Ohio State was whistled for an equipment violation, due to the color of the gloves of one of its players. The infraction cost Ohio State possession late in a tie game that Maryland eventually won in overtime. Needless to say, there was a lot of talk about the incident in the lacrosse world.
4. Bringing an important story to a new platform
Northwestern women’s lacrosse player Leah Holmes ventured into new waters to produce on a film on a timely topic – the stress and mental health challenges of athletes.
5. Furman’s Epstein draws on own challenges to build future.
Cochlear implants have helped Furman lacrosse player Alana Epstein with her hearing after being born deaf. After spending the last two summers volunteering at Atlanta Speech School, Epstein is applying for graduate school for audiology.
Navy has found inspiration from Jack Dennehy, who has overcome losing both of his parents just three years apart.
On the field, Navy’s men’s lacrosse team is finding the right recipe for success at the right time, beating it second straight Top 20 opponent with an 11-10 Friday night win over Loyola.
Georgetown men’s lacrosse opened the year with high expectations, only to lose three straight games. Now, with six straight wins, the Hoyas are closer to the path they expected to be.
Five key seniors for Maryland’s women’s lacrosse team have announced they’re coming back for another season — Shaylan Ahearn, Brianna Lamoureux, Hannah Leubecker, Libby May and Emily Sterling.
