Dialed In: Your Lacrosse Fix for Wednesday, March 29

Good morning. Here’s the latest from around the lacrosse world:

1. The first in-season updates to the Nike/USA Lacrosse high school rankings came out Tuesday.

• McDonogh (Md.), St. Anthony’s (N.Y.) and Academy of the New Church (Pa.) were the biggest movers in the Nike/USA Lacrosse High School Boys’ National Top 25. Previously unranked, ANC made a splash to start the season with a 10-9 OT win at reigning WCAC champion St. John’s (D.C.) and defeated St. Paul’s (Md.) 9-8 at the FCA Invitational.

• Maryvale (Md.), St. Anne’s-Belfield (Va.), Notre Dame Prep (Md.) and Owen J. Roberts (Pa.) all joined the Nike/USA Lacrosse High School Girls’ National Top 25. None were ranked in the preseason.

• Regional Top 10s also were updated for all five regions (Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, South, Midwest and West). Find the boys’ update here and the girls’ update here.

2. No. 1 Syracuse just keeps rolling.

The top-ranked team in the Nike/USA Lacrosse Division I Women’s Top 20, the undefeated Orange received another sterling performance from their star trio of Meaghan Tyrrell, Emma Tyrrell and Emma Ward. They combined for 17 points in a 19-13 win over Cornell at JMA Wireless Dome.

Pitt 13, Youngstown State 9
UConn 14, Hofstra 13 (OT)

3. Only two undefeated teams remain in Division II men’s lacrosse. Both reside in the Northeast-10.

No. 1 Le Moyne knocked No. 11 Pace from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 12-8 victory over the Setters, while No. 2 Adelphi outlasted Saint Rose in a 20-16 shootout.

The other undefeated team entering the week, No. 9 Frostburg State, lost in overtime to No. 17 Seton Hill. Trailing 13-9 entering the final two minutes of the game, the Griffins scored four goals in a span of 25 seconds to send the game to overtime. Vincent Cogliandro capped the crazy comeback with a man-up goal in overtime as Seton Hill prevailed 14-13.

4. No. 1 Tufts found a new way to win Tuesday. The Jumbos did it with defense.

Averaging a staggering 24 goals per game, Tufts met more resistance from Union in a battle of two teams ranked inside the top five of the Nike/USA Division III Men’s Top 20. The Jumbos trailed 7-5 midway through the second quarter but shut out the Dutchmen for the final 38 minutes to claw out a 14-7 victory.

Defenseman Kyle Adelmann spearheaded the effort with three caused turnovers and nine ground balls.

In another matchup of nationally ranked teams, No. 10 Bowdoin held off No. 20 Babson 13-12.

WHAT WE’RE READING

• Concordia men’s lacrosse player Brett Masaki recently underwent emergency surgery to remove a cancerous mass from his brain and was diagnosed with lymphoma, according to a Go Fund Me page established to generate financial support.

• “Be like Brent.” How Mount St. Joseph’s (Md.) honored its late coach before its game against rival Catonsville.
