Good morning. Here’s the latest from around the lacrosse world:
1. And then there were two.
Syracuse and Denver are the last of the unbeatens in NCAA Division I women’s lacrosse, as Yale held off previously undefeated Army in West Point 14-13 on Tuesday.
Fallon Vaughn scored three of her game-high four goals during the final minutes of the third quarter and assisted the eventual game-winning goal by Olivia Penoyer, propelling the Bulldogs (9-2) to their fifth straight win. Cami Donadio made a last-minute save to preserve the victory. The Black Knights came into the day 11-0.
Top goal scorer Jenna Collignon was face-guarded but contributed in a big way with 10 draw controls, combining with Sky Carrasquillo to win all six draws in the fourth quarter. Yale’s current streak includes wins over Duke, Princeton and Army.
Another red-hot team, Marquette, withstood a fourth-quarter surge from Ohio State and held on for a 13-12 victory over the visiting Buckeyes. The Golden Eagles have won eight straight games and set a new program record with their 11th win Tuesday.
Tuesday’s scores:
Hartford 4, Central Connecticut 18
Ohio State 12, Marquette 13
Penn 17, Lehigh 9
Stonehill 6, Harvard 13
No. 14 Yale 14, No. 13 Army 13
2. Everything came up Elis on Tuesday, as the Yale men’s lacrosse team snapped a three-game skid with a 17-14 victory over visiting Boston University.
The Bulldogs’ big four delivered. Leo Johnson scored four goals, while Matt Brandau, Chris Lyons and Thomas Bragg each contributed a hat trick. Brandau and Lyons added three assists apiece. Yale (4-4) led 17-9 midway through the fourth quarter before BU (7-3) closed with five unanswered goals but fell short.
In the only other NCAA Division I men’s lacrosse game Tuesday, Carter Page scored six goals and Scott Macmillan made 11 saves to lead Saint Joseph’s to a 13-3 road win at Monmouth.
3. It’s bracketology season. With five weeks until Selection Sunday, Patrick Stevens projects a windfall for the ACC and Big Ten in the current NCAA men’s lacrosse tournament picture. Jeremy Fallis sees diminishing returns out of the Big Ten and Ivy League leading to compelling resumes for new contenders from the Big East and Patriot League in his NCAA women’s lacrosse tournament projection.
4. Agnes Irwin (Pa.) went from unranked into the top 10 of the Nike/USA Lacrosse High School Girls’ National Top 25, headlining Tuesday’s release of the latest high school boys’ and girls’ lacrosse national and regional rankings.
