Dialed In: Your Lacrosse Fix for Tuesday, Sept. 19

September 19, 2023

Good morning. Here’s the latest from around the lacrosse world:

1. A look at the most impactful transfers in Division I women’s lacrosse.

The summer activity in the transfer portal should quiet down next year, as the players set to take the field as fifth years in 2024 were freshmen when the pandemic shut down the 2020 season. Though, notably, not all of the biggest names to switch uniforms this summer were fifth years. Kenny DeJohn gives early projections on the transfers most likely to make significant impacts next season.

2. USA Lacrosse unveils U.S. men’s box national player pool.

On Monday, head coach Regy Thorpe announced the 66-player pool for the U.S. men’s box national team. Forty players are currently on NLL teams, including All-NLL selection Tom Schreiber. The pool also includes 15 players who were on the 2019 team that took bronze, including Trevor Baptiste and Joel White. Here’s the complete list of players

3. Kyle Hartzell announces retirement.

Kyle Hartzell, a long-stick midfielder who produced a 16-year professional career, announced his retirement in a statement on Monday. Hartzell won a gold medal with the U.S. men’s national team in 2018. Read more.

WHAT WE’RE READING

  • Dyson Williams was the No. 1 draft pick in Saturday’s NLL draft and will suit up for Albany in 2023. In 2020, he discussed family, his late brother and the real meaning of No. 51. It’s worth a re-read.

  • Former faceoff specialist at Georgia Southern (MCLA) Nick Alo turned his tassel in 2021 and is now the ticket operations specialist with the Savannah Bananas (real team name). Last Thursday, the world learned his stick work was a transferable skill when he used it to pitch. Now that’s bananas.

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING

We weren’t kidding about Nick Alo.
