Dialed In: Your Lacrosse Fix for Tuesday, May 30

May 30, 2023
Beth Ann Mayer

Good morning. Here’s the latest from around the lacrosse world:

1. First time, long time: Notre Dame wins program's first NCAA title.

After six trips to the NCAA Final Four,  Notre Dame will bring the national championship trophy back to South Bend. The Irish jumped out to a 6-1 lead over top-seeded Duke by halftime and held off a third-quarter surge from the Blue Devils in a 13-9 win Monday afternoon at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. The Irish join Denver (2015) as the only two teams not from the eastern seaboard to win an NCAA championship. Full recap

2. Liam Entenmann earns Most Outstanding Player.

Notre Dame goalie Liam Entenmann made eight of his 17 saves in the fourth quarter Monday, earning Most Outstanding Player honors. The full list includes players from all four national semifinalists.

3. ICYMI: Best of the rest of championship weekend

Not by a TV or computer this weekend? Here’s what you missed out on.

  • WD1: The Wildcats found the joy in lacrosse again in 2023 — and now find themselves national champions for the first time since 2012. Izzy Scane was named Most Outstanding Player, and the Wildcats’ defense, led by Samantha White, held Boston College to 19 shots.

  • WD3: Middlebury’s perfect season ends with a second-straight national title. The Panthers dominated Gettysburg 17-9.

  • MD2: Lenoir-Rhyne thumped Mercyhurst 20-5 for its first NCAA crown.

  • MD3: Salisbury tied Hobart for most NCAA championships in Division III history (13) in a 17-12 win over Tufts.

WHAT WE’RE READING

  •  Defending champion Colorado is still alive in the NLL championship series. The Mammoth forced a winner-take-all game 3 with a 16-10 win over Buffalo Monday afternoon.

  • Kenny DeJohn writes about how Jenn Medjid took the torch from the Big 3 and kept alive Boston College’s tradition of playing on championship Sunday.

  • The Chaos finished 2-8 — and as the PLL runner-up last season after a third-straight run to the championship game. What does 2023 hold? Our PLL preview looks at key storylines.

  • Ryan Scobie played in six games at LSM for men’s Division II national runner-up Mercyhurst in 2023. Two years ago, what he thought was the flu turned out to be heart failure that required a transplant. He spoke with TODAY about his condition and gratitude for the most important teammate he’s ever had — his donor.

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING

That’s one way to break a ride.

Chris Kavanagh was too busy for the pool days often associated with Memorial Day Weekend. But he found a way to dive in anyway.

Look up brick wall, and you’ll see a screenshot of Liam Entenmann’s performance yesterday. Watching it is more fun, though.
