Dialed In: Your Lacrosse Fix for Monday, May 15

Good morning. Here’s the latest from around the lacrosse world:

1. An opening weekend that delivered.

Virginia and Notre Dame kicked off the first round of the NCAA Division I men’s tournament with blowout wins, but things heated up after those games. Five of the next six games, besides a Johns Hopkins win over Bryant, went down to the wire, including four decided by just one goal and one that went to overtime.

Top-seeded Duke barely got past Delaware, Michigan kept its dream season alive beating Cornell in OT, Penn State had a dramatic rally to beat Princeton, Army beat reigning champion Maryland and Georgetown won a shootout over Yale.

2. Defense ruled in the NCAA Division I women’s second round.

Florida was the only seeded team that failed to advance to the NCAA Division I women’s quarterfinals, but there were plenty of close calls. Six of Sunday’s eight games were decided by two goals or less and half of the teams advanced despite scoring fewer than 10 goals.

In the one-goal games, top-seeded Northwestern snuck by Michigan, Loyola edged Stony Brook, Florida’s rally came up short against Notre Dame, but James Madison came back against Maryland. Denver’s unbeaten season continued with an 8-6 win over Albany, Boston College got by Penn 9-7 and North Carolina pulled away from Richmond. The only blowout was Syracuse dominating Johns Hopkins.

3. LeMoyne is ready for a final run.

LeMoyne is moving up to NCAA Division I, but the Dolphins are back in familiar territory – the semifinals of NCAA Division II men’s tournament.

4. Grand Valley knocks off the champs.

Grand Valley State beat reigning NCAA Division II women’s champion UIndy to advance to the semifinal round.

5. A thrilling game-ender in NCAA Division III women.

The NCAA Division III second round included Trinity beating MIT 11-10 on a behind-the-head shot.
