Good morning. Here’s the latest from around the lacrosse world:
1. Who’s No. 1?
Every Division I men’s team now carries a loss on its resume after Virginia defeated Notre Dame 15-10 at Arlotta on Saturday, so perfection isn’t a possibility this spring. Notre Dame had a hold on the top spot for one week, but it now appears as if Virginia will reclaim its perch.
The atmosphere at Arlotta was incredible, especially with the entire Notre Dame football team stopping by to stir things up. (More on that in the Post-Week Tailgate.)
That was certainly the biggest score of the weekend in the men’s game. Other scores of note:
Army 10, Loyola 5
Cornell 18, Penn 12
Dartmouth 10, Harvard 9
Duke 12, Saint Joseph’s 9
Georgetown 17, Lehigh 15
Johns Hopkins 15, Michigan 11
Maryland 13, Penn State 10
North Carolina 25, Providence 8
Ohio State 11, Rutgers 7
Princeton 23, Yale 10
Syracuse 18, Hobart 7
2. For the first time this season, there wasn’t chaos in women’s lacrosse.
It was a pretty straightforward weekend, one that shouldn’t completely shatter last week’s Nike/USA Lacrosse Top 20. It wasn’t without headlines, though. Michigan Jill Smith broke the program’s single-season goals record against Rutgers in just her 11th game of the season, for example. (More from the weekend in The Sunday Slide.)
Some scores of note from the weekend:
Boston College 14, Virginia Tech 12
Duke 16, Pitt 8
James Madison 10, Temple 8
Michigan 14, Rutgers 4
North Carolina 17, Clemson 8
Northwestern 20, Stanford 9
Princeton 15, Cornell 11
Richmond 15, Saint Joseph’s 9
Syracuse 17, Louisville 5
USC 17, Colorado 13
Virginia 16, Notre Dame 13
3. Greensboro College is mourning the death of captain Seth Mandryk.
Mandryk, a graduate transfer from Barton, died Monday by suicide, according to the News & Record. Mandryk had started all eight games on attack for the Pride and ranked second on the team with 20 goals.
Greensboro will next play March 29 against Warren Wilson.
