Good morning. Here’s the latest from around the lacrosse world:
1. The U.S. men’s team has secured the No. 1 seed.
The U.S. wrapped up pool play with a 4-0 record to secure the No. 1 seed at the World Lacrosse Men’s Championship in San Diego. On Sunday, the U.S. squad rolled to its easiest win of the tournament, an 18-1 victory over England behind four goals and three assists from Rob Pannell.
Matt Rambo’s multiple fakes was the highlight of the day and the the No. 1 seed gives the U.S. two days off. They’ll return to action on Wednesday in the quarterfinal round.
2. The U.S. defense speaks loudly.
The U.S. defense has been phenomenal through the tournament, just 16 goals allowed in four games, and J.T. Giles Harris vs. Lyle Thompson was must-see lacrosse.
3. Building the national team pipeline.
This year’s U.S. team includes four former U19 age group players, including three — Ryan Conrad, Jack Rowlett Michael Sowers — that formed a bond in a comeback win over Canada in the 2016 world championship.
4. The end of an era for Cabrini.
Cabrini is one of the top Division III lacrosse programs in the country, but the 2023-24 school year will be the last for the school. Villanova has bought Cabrini and Cabrini will cease operations.
5. Two lacrosse players up for ESPYs
Tewaaraton winners Brennan O’Neill and Izzy Scane are among four candidates in each gender for the outstanding college athlete at this year’s ESPYs.
6. Ducks look to one of their own.
Former Oregon player Jessica Drummond has been named as the head women’s lacrosse coach at the school.
