Dialed In: Your Lacrosse Fix for Monday, Jan. 30

Good morning. Here’s the latest from around the lacrosse world:

1.  It’s almost Go Time!

The NCAA Division I men’s lacrosse schedule kicks off in less than a week, it opens with a bang. Eight of the Top 20 teams in the Nike/USA Lacrosse Magazine NCAA Division I Preseason Top 20 will be in action on Saturday. This week on USALaxMagazine.com, we’ll finish our preseason previews with looks at the top five men’s and women’s programs.

2. Undefeated no more.

Eleven different players scored goals and Warren Hill made 43 saves as Halifax ended Rochester’s perfect season in the National Lacrosse League with a thud, winning 17-7 on Friday night. Buffalo picked up a pair of wins on the weekend – beating Philadelphia and New York – to improve to 6-2, just one-half game behind the Knighthawks (6-1) in the East.

In the West, the Seals held Colorado scoreless for the first 26 minutes of the game, eventually winning 13-9 to improve to 5-1 for the season. San Diego is one and a half games ahead of Colorado (3-2) and Saskatchewan (3-2).

3. Can the Orange stay healthy?

Injuries have wreaked havoc on Syracuse in recent seasons, but if the Orange can stay healthy – watch out. The Tyrrell sisters are back, but the talent doesn’t end there.

4. Notre Dame will be plenty motivated.

Notre Dame was one of the hottest teams in the country at the end of 2022 – but didn’t get an invitation to the NCAA men’s tournament. Irish head coach Kevin Corrigan doesn’t think the Irish will need much motivation this season.

5. Two years away from the game didn’t faze Middlebury’s star.

A year spent waitressing on Cape Cod instead of playing lacrosse couldn’t derail Middlebury’s Jane Earley, the USA Lacrosse Magazine NCAA Division III Women’s Preseason Player of the Year.

WHAT WE’RE READING

• Experience playing at the top level has helped Taylor Chumney Scotton transition successfully to officiating lacrosse.

• A $22 million lacrosse facility is coming to Navy lacrosse.

• Thirteen-year-old Brody Fuller got to turn the tables on his coach, pro and U.S. team player Brian Phipps, in our Take Me Back series with USA Lacrosse Magazine.

• Zach Diamond helped Manheim Township (Pa.) win a state championship five years ago. Now he’s continuing his lacrosse career with the Charlotte Bootleggers in the PBLA.

Who did it better? Steph Curry and Klay Thompson with the Arizona State women’s team a few years ago or Deion Sanders with Colorado recently?
