Manchester Valley (Md.) won a huge showdown over Severna Park (Md.) in dominant fashion, 15-5, to help the Mavericks jump to No. 1 in the USA Lacrosse Public High School Girls' National Top 25.
Darien (Conn.) dropped a spot to No. 2 despite victories over Manhasset (N.Y.) and Rye (N.Y.).
Bayport-Blue Point (N.Y.), Severna Park (Md.) and Chatham (N.J.) round out the top five.
Manchester Valley’s win over Severna Park came with both teams playing twice that day, and Severna Park coming off an impressive win of their own over private school St. Mary’s (Md.) in its first game of a home playday. The Mavericks’ Emma Penczek scored five goalies and delivered four assists and Taylor Fique added five goals in the win that propelled Manchester Valley to the top ranking.
Three new teams entered the rankings. West Islip (N.Y.) knocked off previous No. 21 Wilton (Conn.) 8-6 behind three goals and two assists from Ava Obloj to take that spot. Broadneck (Md.) and South Side (N.Y.) are No. 23 and No. 25, respectively.
The Cyclones have won four in a row, three of them one-goal games. Their latest was an 8-7 win over former No. 23 Cold Spring Harbor (N.Y.).
In the regional rankings, Mid-Atlantic No. 7 Haddonfield (N.J.) was upset by Rumson-Fair Haven (N.J.) and No. 10 Radnor (Pa.) lost to Garnet Valley (Pa.) to open the door for Cape Henlopen (Del.) to return to the mix. The Vikings already boast wins over Queen Anne’s County (Md.) and Broadneck this season.
In the Midwest, Prior Lake (Minn.) debuts at No. 10. The Lakers opened the season with three straight wins by a combined 52-17 score.
