Broadneck (Md.) captured a matchup of defending Maryland state champions to make a big move into the USA Lacrosse Public High School Girls' National Top 25.
Nora Lopes scored six goals, Sienna Miller and Avery Katzen each had a hat trick and two assists, and Cayman Holmes supplied three assists as the four-time defending 4A state champion Bruins defeated last year’s 2A champion, Glenelg High (Md.), in the first week of their season.
Comparing scores doesn’t always translate, but when Downingtown West (Pa.) hung a 17-6 loss on Villa Maria Academy (Pa.), it spoke volumes. Another Keystone State power, Radnor (Pa.), had just beaten Villa Maria 12-10.
Broadneck and Downingtown West both climbed nationally and into the top 10 in the Mid-Atlantic region. In the South, Cambridge (Ga.) took over the top spot with an impressive win over previously unbeaten Milton (Ga.). The Bears also jumped nationally.
Hinsdale Central (Ill.) crossed state lines to win a showdown with defending Indiana champion Carmel (Ind.) to move to No. 3 in the Midwest Region. East Grand Rapids (Mich.) enters the rankings after a 2-0 start.
Marlborough (Calif.) made a big jump to No. 5 in the West Region with its fifth straight win. The Mustangs’ only two losses have come to No. 1 Foothill-Santa Ana (Calif.) and No. 2 Mira Costa (Calif.). Bainbridge Island (Wash.) rides a 5-0 start into the rankings.
The Northeast Region sees its teams starting up in earnest this week. Several New York teams begin play today.
