USA Lacrosse High School Boys' Players of the Week
The USA Lacrosse Players of the Week recognize the most outstanding individual performances in high school boys’ lacrosse in each of the five regions — Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, South, Midwest and West — outlined in our high school coverage.
NORTHEAST
Cal Girard, Manhasset (N.Y.)
Cal Girard was making sure history didn’t repeat itself in the 139th Woodstick Classic. A year ago, the Manhasset (N.Y.) faceoff specialist had an epic battle with Garden City’s Jack Cascadden, holding the slight edge overall (14-13), but Girard lost the faceoff to start overtime and Stevie Finnell scored the winner for the visiting Trojans.
At Garden City Saturday, the Duke-bound senior was a perfect 19-for-19, including the overtime faceoff, which led to Jack Petersen’s winner for the Indians 12 seconds later. Girard, who is winning 85 percent from the faceoff X this season, was instrumental in allowing Manhasset the opportunity to claw back from an early 5-0 deficit and remain undefeated on the season.
“Cal’s an All-American for a reason,” Manhasset coach Keith Cromwell told Newsday after the game. “He’s one of the best at that position. He did his job extremely well today. We wouldn’t be where we are without him.”
This is Girard’s second Northeast Boys Player of the Week honor of the season.

MID-ATLANTIC
Kyle Basco, Calvert Hall (Md.)
For the second season in a row, Calvert Hall started MIAA A Conference play a little slower than they would have liked. But after going 3-2 a pair of big wins last week has them right in the middle of the things with two weeks left in the regular season. Basco scored his second goal of the game with 2:38 left in overtime to give the Cardinals an 8-7 win over Boys’ Latin (Md.). Both teams now have two losses in MIAA play.
The senior midfielder who is bound for Bryant next year also had a hat trick in a 12-7 win over Gilman to start the week. With the wins, Calvert Hall sits third in the MIAA A with three games to play after improving to 5-2 in the toughest conference in the country. Calvert has won six out of its last seven games overall.
Also notable: Wills Burt, Haverford (Pa.); Brendan Dundas, Springside Chestnut Hill (Pa.); Caleb Fyock, St. John’s (D.C.); Matt Higgins, Boys’ Latin (Md.); Ryan Salazar, Broadneck (Md.); Jackson Strickland, Calvert Hall (Md.)

SOUTH
Nick Testa, St. Andrew’s (Fla.)
For the second time this year, Nick Testa is the region Player of the Week as he continues to impress with his pinpoint passing. In last week’s regional semifinal victory over Belen Jesuit (Fla.), Testa contributed seven assists. In the regional title game, the freshman midfielder added three goals and four assists helping St. Andrew’s to a 19-8 win over Pine Crest (Fla.). Testa has compiled a team-leading 68 assists to go with 35 goals heading into the final week of the year.
Also notable: Gavin Boree, Bolles (Fla.); Ethan Streiner, St. Thomas Aquinas (Fla.); Riley Turner, Lake Mary (Fla.)
— Justin Boggs
MIDWEST
Crandall Quinn, Forest Hills Central (Mich.)
The Michigan commit had a huge week to ensure that the Rangers got back into the Midwest’s Top 10 team rankings. Quinn’s heroics included allowing just three goals against Rockford (he had nearly four times as many saves with 11). He also hit the 20-save mark against a solid Hudson (Ohio) team in another win.
Also notable: Gus Bell, Benilde-St. Margaret’s (Minn.); Carsen Brandt, Benilde-St. Margaret’s (Minn.); Khalif Hocker, Forest Hills Central (Mich.); Luke McNamara, Rockhurst Jesuit (Kan.)

WEST
Grant Giuliano, Corona del Mar (Calif.)
The senior goalie had an impressive week but most notably came up big for Corona del Mar in a
marquee win for the program, upsetting West Region No. 1 St. Ignatius Prep (Calif.), 6-5, last week. Giuliano collected 12 saves, keeping the Sea Kings in the game before the attack came to life in the fourth quarter to power ahead with three goals. He also had 10 saves in a 12-6 win over No. 7 Foothill-Santa Ana (Calif.) on April 27.
