No. 1 Malvern Prep (Pa.) sidestepped one MIAA landmine this week. Can the Friars make it out of Baltimore unscathed?
Following a gritty 13-10 win over upstart Loyola Blakefield (Md.) on Tuesday, Malvern Prep will take on Calvert Hall (Md.) in a top-five matchup Friday and the USA Lacrosse High School Boys’ National Game of the Week.
Meanwhile, one of the teams the Friars have beaten already, McDonogh (Md.), will look to put yet another one-goal loss behind it during this spring break trip to Florida. The Eagles lost to surging Benjamin (Fla.) 8-7 on a late goal by Sean Sheehan on Tuesday and visit St. Thomas Aquinas (Fla.) on Thursday.
Each Thursday here at USA Lacrosse Magazine, we’ll highlight upcoming games to watch in our respective regions of coverage. National rankings denoted below.
No. 1 Malvern Prep (Pa.) (4-0) at No. 5 Calvert Hall (Md.) (4-0)
Friday, 6 p.m. EDT | National Top 25
The Friars (4-0) remained unbeaten with a 13-10 victory at No. 11 Loyola Blakefield (Md.) on Tuesday. They’ve been an absolute wagon through the first three weeks of the season. Can they continue their torrid start against the Cardinals (4-0)? Calvert Hall breezed past Sts. Peter and Paul (Md.) with a 21-6 win Wednesday. Malvern Prep prevailed 13-9 when these two teams met last year.
No. 19 Bullis (Md.) at No. 4 Archbishop Spalding (Md.)
Friday, 4:30 p.m. EDT | Mid-Atlantic Top 10
The host Cavaliers (5-0) have yet to allow an opponent to reach double figures scoring and boast impressive wins over Canadian juggernaut Hill Academy (Ontario) and nationally ranked Western Reserve (Ohio). The Bulldogs (5-1) would also be undefeated save for a 12-11 loss at St. Paul’s (Md.)
No. 13 McDonogh (Md.) at St. Thomas Aquinas (Fla.)
Thursday, 6 p.m. EDT | South Top 10
This will mark the third game in as many days for the Eagles (2-3) on their spring break trip to Florida. They bounced back from their loss at Benjamin (Fla.) with a 12-5 victory Wednesday over Jupiter (Fla.). St. Thomas Aquinas (11-1), ranked No. 5 in the latest USA Lacrosse South Top 10, handled Gilman (Md.) 15-4 on Tuesday.
Detroit Catholic Central (Mich.) at Detroit Country Day (Mich.)
Friday, 7 p.m. EDT | Midwest Top 10
It’s the season-opener for Detroit Catholic Central, the reigning state champion which is ranked No. 3 in the USA Lacrosse Midwest Top 10. Detroit Country Day got off on the right foot with a 15-6 win over Forest Hills Central (Mich.) on Wednesday.
Marin Catholic (Calif.) at De La Salle (Calif.)
Friday, 8:30 EDT | West Top 10
A battle of two teams ranked in the USA Lacrosse West Top 10. No. 5 Marin Catholic (7-1) defeated Legend (Colo.) in double overtime earlier this week and have won four straight overall. No. 6 De La Salle (5-1) has beaten everyone but preseason regional No. 1 St. Ignatius (Calif.), including a convincing 14-3 win at Oak Ridge (Calif.) on Monday.
Since 1978, USA Lacrosse Magazine has inspired generations of lacrosse families to love this great game and leave it better for the next. We harness the power of storytelling to help fuel the sport’s growth and enrich the experience of participants.
