Sister Act Helps Delaware Get Off to 2-0 Start

Jaclyn Marszal scored a pair of goals and her sister, goalie Steph Marszal, made 12 saves as Delaware beat UMBC 9-6 to improve to 2-0 for the season. It’s the second straight year that Delaware, which hosts Mount St. Mary’s on Saturday, has started the year 2-0.

Jaclyn, a transfer from Notre Dame, has seven goals in the Blue Hens first two games. Steph, a redshirt freshman, is in her first year as a starter and has made 26 saves in the two victories while allowing just 13 goals.

How the Top 20 Fared

Rachel Clark made her debut for No. 2 Boston College as the Eagles rolled to a 15-7 victory over UAlbany. Clark, a transfer from Virginia, did not play in the Eagles season-opening win over Massachusetts, but scored four goals in BC’s win on Wednesday. Kayla Martello also scored four times for Boston College.

No. 4 James Madison had no hangover after its weekend win over North Carolina, easily handling state rival Virginia Tech 17-5. Isabella Peterson (5g, 3a) and Kacey Knoblach (4g, 4a) each had eight points for the Dukes who will play UConn at USA Lacrosse headquarters on Saturday.

Syracuse Triumph

No. 6 Syracuse picked up its first win of 2024, scoring 13 first-half goals in an 18-7 victory over No. 15 Army West Point. Payton Rowley and Natalie Smith each scored four goals for the Orange and Olivia Adamson had a team-high four assists.

Dominant defense continued to carry No. 13 Michigan as the Wolverines beat Cincinnati 14-4. The Wolverines have allowed just a combined five goals in their first two games, both victories. Jill Smith had five goals and two assists for Michigan while Erin O’Grady made eight saves while allowing just two goals.

Notable

  • Corinne Bednarik has 19 points in Drexel’s first two games. She had four goals and four assists in a 15-3 win over Wagner on Wednesday.
  • UMass-Lowell is 2-0 for the first time in school history. Megan Brockbank (3g, 4a) and Jillian Goldie (5g, 2a) each had seven points in an 18-9 win over Merrimack.
  • Fairfield’s 11-9 victory over state rival UConn was its first over the Huskies since 2019 and just the second since 2009. With UConn ranked No. 24 in the IWLCA poll, it was Fairfield’s first win ever over a nationally-ranked team. Head coach Laura Field won her 92nd career game to tie the school’s all-time record.
