William Smith scored six goals on Saturday. Maddie Montgomery scored five of them. She assisted the other.

Montgomery single-handedly willed the Herons to a 6-5 win over St. John Fisher in the third round of the Division III women’s NCAA tournament, as her 78th goal of the spring came with 2:10 left and pushed William Smith to a win. The Herons are still perfect at 20-0.

Montgomery scored the game’s first two goals, but St. John Fisher responded. Sydney Carpenter scored with 31 seconds left in the first quarter, then Mary Fiorentino, Cara Landry and Mykenzie Black scored another three SJF goals spanning the entire second quarter and the first 7:03 of the third.

All told, William Smith went 28:03 between goals. That quiet period ended when Montgomery netted a woman-up goal to cut the deficit to 4-3. She scored another 2:35 later to knot it at 4.

The next goal came from someone not named Maddie Montgomery. It was Allie McGinty — assisted by Montgomery, of course — who put SJF on its toes with 6:19 left.

The response came less than three minutes later, when Carpenter’s second goal of the game tied it at 5. That set up Montgomery’s winner.
