Randy Mearns will not return as the head coach of the St. Bonaventure men’s lacrosse team, the university announced Monday.
Mearns, who has led the program since its inception in 2017, went 24-62 in seven seasons with the Bonnies. He was previously the head coach at Canisius for 19 seasons. His career record is 100-157, highlighted by MAAC tournament championships and NCAA tournament appearances with the Griffins in 2008 and 2012.
Mearns’ best season at St. Bonaventure came in 2022 — Brett Dobson’s senior year. Now a two-time PLL championship winning goalie with the Utah Archers, Dobson backstopped the Bonnies to an 11-4 record and a postseason run that ended in the MAAC final. St. Bonaventure moved to the Atlantic 10 the following year.
“After careful assessment of the program, I am confident we can achieve our goal of competing for an Atlantic 10 Conference championship under new leadership,” athletic director Bob Beretta said. “We will work tirelessly to identify the best candidate to accomplish that mission."
Mearns has also coached internationally, leading the Canadian national team to a world championship in 2014 and runner-up finish in 2018.
The Bonnies (6-10, 1-4 A10) upset High Point 10-9 in their regular season finale Saturday, but it was not enough to get them into the four-team conference tournament.
