We are off and running in Division II men’s lacrosse.
Most of the USA Lacrosse Division II Men’s Top 20 was in action over the weekend, with multiple games between ranked opponents dotting the slate. The No. 2 team in the nation, Limestone, challenged itself early with a trio of ranked opponents and came away with three wins.
Zach Terry and Mike McGarry are both off to hot starts, combining for 21 points in those three games.
Florida Southern, Lewis and UIndy were the three teams that took a shot at Limestone and came up short. Limestone won by a combined 38-28. For Florida Southern, it was one of two losses to a ranked opponent this week, the other coming in a one-goal throwdown with Wingate.
Lewis, one of last year’s most celebrated teams, also played a difficult opening schedule, taking on ranked opponents in Limestone and Newberry. While the game was close throughout, Lewis never trailed Newberry and won 12-10. The Limestone game was tougher, though, as Lewis hung tight for the first half, even holding an early 4-2 lead, but the Saints pulled away for a 19-8 win.
Elsewhere in the Top 20, Maryville is 1-1 but has yet to play a game that ended in regulation. After falling in overtime to No. 3 Lenoir-Rhyne last weekend, Maryville bounced back with an overtime victory in Kansas City at Rockhurst.
The Saints withstood a furious comeback, as the Hawks scored five of the game's last six goals — including the equalizer with two seconds left in regulation from Jonah McConnell. In what can only be described as cinematic, defender John Chorlton stepped up and scored in the last 50 seconds of the overtime stanza and won it for Maryville.
