In a week with multiple top-10 matchups, it was Anderson that delivered the result of the weekend.
The Trojans stunned Lenoir-Rhyne 15-9 on Saturday, a power bomb through a proverbial table of woe. It is a result that sends Division II into a new world order that would make Kevin Nash and the Wolfpack blush.
Anderson got 15 goals from 11 players and points from 15 players. Ryan Bitterman’s hat trick led the Trojans, but nobody else had more than two goals. A true team offensive effort enabled the biggest upset of the season to date. Lenoir-Rhyne struggled to clear in the second half, particularly in the fourth quarter, which took the wind out of the sails of any comeback effort.
That wasn’t the only unranked team to deliver a shocking result. CUI took down Rollins 12-11 in overtime. The Tars, who are in a bit of a free fall as of late, needed a three-goal run in the fourth quarter to force overtime in the first place, only to have Concordia-Irvine’s Jeremy Barnes called game with 46 seconds left in the extra frame. Rollins is now 3-3 with NCAA Division II champion Adelphi as its next opponent on Monday. Talk about Sunday scaries.
Another notable upset of the weekend was Seton Hill’s 15-5 demolition of UIndy. The Griffins were not shy with their shots, hitting double-digit shot totals through the first three quarters and finishing with a 42-27 advantage. UIndy’s slide continues, as the Greyhounds have now dipped below the .500 mark at 3-4 — and out of the Top 20 altogether.
Flagler’s incredible start continued, as the Saints downed previously undefeated Saint Leo in another OT thriller, 8-7. The win lifts Flagler upward in the Top 20 once again, and Saint Leo’s undefeated run comes to an end. Is there a better story than Flagler in all of lacrosse so far this season?
Saint Anselm’s 10-7 win over regional foe Bentley keeps the NE-10 in order, as the Falcons threatened to make their way into the top three if that result had gone the other direction. As it stands, it's Adelphi holding court, Saint Anselm in the second spot and still-undefeated Pace right there waiting for the Panthers or the Hawks to slip up. Saint Michael’s is also in the mix of the Top 20 — as well as the NE-10 — after registering its fourth win in a row.
The bottom half of the Top 20 is in disarray, but more importantly, one of the top three has fallen. Who will be next? Beware the Ides of March.
