A season of high expectations took another leap forward as Richmond beat No. 6 Virginia 13-12 in overtime, the Spiders first win over their in-state rival since 2006.
Last year’s Atlantic 10 champion brought in a recruiting class ranked No. 10 nationally by Inside Lacrosse and one of those players played the hero on Wednesday night as Lindsey Frank, a freshman from Gansevoort, N.Y., scored the game-winner in overtime.
Richmond scored the first three goals of the game and led most of the way, but had to overcome a late Virginia comeback.
After Richmond went up 11-7 midway through the second half, Virginia scored five straight goals, taking a 12-11 lead on Olivia Schildmeyer’s goal with 1:51 left in regulation.
Richmond star Sam Geiersbach ended the run and forced overtime on a free position goal with 52 seconds to play.
Richmond had several chances in overtime, but Virginia goalie Charlie Campbell made three of her 10 saves in extra time to keep the Cavaliers alive.
Campbell's saves set up opportunities for Virginia late in the second half of the first overtime period. The Cavaliers had a free position shot go wide and another shot blocked. Richmond’s Brittney Wright picked up the ground ball off the blocked shot and ran the length of the field to clear it and set up Frank’s game-winner.
Geiersbach, a junior, led the Richmond (5-0) offense with six points on three goals and three assists. Frank and senior Madison Ostrick each had hat tricks. Sammy Mueller and Courtlynne Caskin each scored three for Virginia (4-1).
Hopkins Stuns Georgetown in Final Second
Maggie Schneidereith’s goal with one second remaining gave Johns Hopkins a 15-14 victory over Georgetown to cap a wild game and thwart the Hoyas late comeback attempt.
Schneidereith’s goal with 4:14 to play gave the Blue Jays a seemingly comfortable 14-11 lead, but Annabelle Albert scored back to back goals for Georgetown and Ali Diamond’s goal with 37 seconds remaining tied the score at 14.
Georgetown won the ensuing draw, but Hopkins goalie Kathleen Garvey made a save with nine seconds left and threw a nearly full-field outlet past to Schneidereith. Schneidereith took it to goal and delivered the game-winning goal with a single tick left on the clock.
Schneidereith’s four goals led the Blue Jays (2-2) and Garvey made 13 saves. Diamond led the Hoyas (2-2) with four goals.
