There were six teams ranked in the Nike/USA Lacrosse Division I Women’s Top 20 in action for some midweek lacrosse Wednesday night, and one was knocked off by a team that was not even considered in the most recent update to the Top 20.

There were other close games across the country, too. Here’s what happened in Wednesday’s 14 games.

HISTORY FOR VIRGINIA TECH

Virginia Tech earned its first-ever win over No. 14 James Madison, as the Hokies rallied to score the final three goals in a 10-9 win. Freshman Olivia Vergano scored the winner, and Sophie Student scored the goals that tied the score and got her team within one.

James Madison (0-2) led 6-4 at halftime and 7-5 with 5:43 left in the third quarter. Vergano and Student, in a precursor to their later heroics, scored consecutive goals to tie the score at 7.

Up 9-7 with 12:06 left, James Madison’s defense couldn’t hold back the spirited VT comeback.

James Madison is now 0-2 after opening with a loss to second-ranked North Carolina, and Virginia Tech is 1-1 after starting the spring with a big loss against Jacksonville. This is Kristen Skiera’s first win as Virginia Tech’s head coach.

UCONN OUTLASTS FAIRFIELD

Fairfield, the four-time defending MAAC champion, pushed No. 20 UConn to the brink.

The Stags’ Elizabeth Talluto tied the score at 10 with 9:25 left in the fourth quarter, but Grace Coon scored while the Huskies were a player up for a one-goal lead with 7:23 left in an eventual 12-10 win.

Coon’s first three goals of the season were all crucial for UConn, as they made the score 9-8, 10-9 and 11-10. Sydney Watson’s fourth goal of the game came with 45 seconds left.

UConn had its largest lead of the game in the third quarter, leading 7-4 with 14:11 left. But Fairfield scored four straight — one goal each from Rylee Harrell, Kelly Horning, Libby Rowe and Amanda Kozak — to turn the tide.

LATE RUN SEALS DEAL FOR DREXEL

Penn State gave Drexel all it could handle, but the Dragons scored the final three goals of the game for a little breathing room in a 12-8 win in Philadelphia.

Karson Harris and Hayleigh Simpson scored three goals each, and Colleen Grady and Lucy Schneidereith each scored twice. Mary Muldoon scored three times for Penn State in its season opener.

Drexel consistently maintained a multi-goal lead until the fourth quarter, when Kristin O’Neill and Muldoon carried a 3-0 Penn State run that made the score 9-8 in favor of Drexel.
