Continuing the trend of the 2022 season, a ranked team fell in an upset Wednesday night.

Also in Division I women’s lacrosse, Jamie Ortega continued her ascent up the all-time scoring chart and Florida rolled to an easy win over Stetson.

ORTEGA ECLIPSES 400 CAREER POINTS

Jamie Ortega was unstoppable Wednesday night in No. 1 North Carolina’s 23-9 win over High Point, amassing six goals and three assists. She became the fifth NCAA lacrosse player ever to reach 400 career points, and she took sole possession of third place (passing Stony Brook’s Courtney Murphy) on the all-time list.

Ortega is 37 points behind the all-time ACC record (Maryland’s Jen Adams, 445). Stony Brook’s Kylie Ohlmiller is No. 1 all time with 498 points.

In a game that featured a 27-minute tornado delay, UNC (10-0) trailed 5-2 early. After tying the score at 5, UNC then trailed 6-5 on Abby Hormes goal for High Point (1-6). Ortega responded by scoring three straight goals in the span of just over two minutes, and UNC never trailed again.

Caitlyn Wurzburger had four goals and two assists, Scottie Rose Growney had three goals and three assists and Andie Aldave had three goals and two assists. Tayler Warehime, who missed about a month before returning on Sunday against Boston College, netted a hat trick.

GEORGETOWN UPSETS NAVY

Emma Ebhardt’s goal with 14:33 remaining provided Georgetown with just enough insurance to outlast a late comeback attempt by No. 14 Navy, as the Hoyas downed the Mids 13-12.

Gebhardt made the score 13-7 on an assist from Kylie Hazen. Gil Eby’s goal less than five minutes later kickstarted a 5-0 game-ending run for Navy (7-2). Leelee Denton scored with 27 seconds remaining to make it a one-score game, but the Mids could not complete the comeback.

Navy’s Twitter account explained the final moments of the contest.

Gebhardt, Erin Bakes, Annabelle Albert and Ali Diamond all had three points for Georgetown (5-4), which beat a ranked opponent for the first time since 2019 — a win over then-No. 20 Penn in the opening round of the NCAA tournament.

NOTABLE

  • No. 7 Florida won its third straight game, a 19-5 decision over Stetson, behind seven points (four goals) from Emma LoPinto. Danielle Pavinelli had two goals and two assists, and Kelly Schluederberg had three goals for Florida (5-4).

  • No. 3 Maryland improved to 8-0 with a 15-11 win over Penn (3-5). Hannah Leubecker scored five goals, and Aurora Cordingley had two goals and four assists. Emily Sterling made 10 saves for the Terps.

  • No. 10 Princeton (6-1) scored the first goal of the game but No. 6 Loyola scored the next four, and the Greyhounds never trailed from there in a 16-15 win in the rain. Playing a game of catch-up, Princeton continually pushed the envelope and kept it close, including when it cut the deficit to one with 1:34 remaining. But a yellow card on the ensuing draw put the Tigers a player down, and Loyola ran out the clock. Georgia Latch had three goals and three assists for Loyola (8-0), and Kyla Sears scored four times for Princeton.
