The Warrior/US Lacrosse Players of the Week are named each Tuesday to recognize the most outstanding individual performances in high school boys' lacrosse in each of the five regions — Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, South, Midwest and West — outlined in our high school coverage.

Northeast

Kevin Sheehan, West Genesee (N.Y.)

The senior attackman scored late in regulation to lift West Genesee to a 9-8 win over Fayetteville-Manlius (N.Y.) in the last home game for legendary coach Mike Messere. Messere is the country’s all-time leader in wins and will be stepping down at the end of the season. He started coaching West Genny in 1976 and now has more than 850 career wins. Sheehan finished with a game-high four goals and two assists to lead the Wildcats. He is headed to the University of Delaware.

Mid-Atlantic

Kyle Long, Springfield-Delco (Pa.)

Long became the latest player to reach 400 career points when the Springfield-Delco (Pa.) senior tallied eight points Tuesday in a 16–10 win over Strath Haven (Pa.). The Maryland commit had six assists and two goals to put him at 404 career points. Long is No. 5 all-time in Pennsylvania in scoring after surpassing Matt Rambo (La Salle College) and Ryan Ambler (Abington) in the last week. He should pass Peet Poillon (Seneca Valley) before the regular season ends. He is second on Pennsylvania’s all-time assist list, behind only Michael Sowers (Upper Dublin).

Denver Aranda, Jupiter (Fla.)

The senior attackman scored five goals in Jupiter’s 11-8 win over Bishop Moore in the Florida High School Athletic Association championship game, helping his team become the first public school to win the Florida boys title. Aranda, who had two ground balls and a caused turnover, scored three goals within 1:05 to help Jupiter to the title. In the semifinal win over St. Andrew’s, Aranda had one assist, four ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Johnny Marrocco, Cincinnati St. Xavier (Ohio)

Marrocco led St. Xavier to an Midwest Scholastic Lacrosse Coaches Association (MSLCA) title last week after huge performances against Cleveland St. Ignatius (Ohio) and Cincinnati (Moeller). Marrocco scored four goals against St. Ignatius and five times versus Moeller. He was also named to the MLSCA’s first team.

West

Owen Gaffney, Loyola-Los Angeles (Calif.)

The freshman delivered the game-winner with 28 seconds left in overtime to push the Cubs past St. Margaret’s (Calif.), 10-9, in the Southern Section final Saturday. Gaffney, a midseason call-up from junior varsity, finished the game with two goals and also had two goals in the Los Angeles championships, a 9-5 win over Palos Verdes.
