Round Rock, Texas (May 9, 2018) – Katherine Vocelka of Georgia and Sophie Smith of the University of Denver were named as the Division I and Division II winners, respectively, of the 2018 Amtahcha Award as the players of the year in the US Lacrosse Women’s Collegiate Lacrosse Associates (WCLA). Both players were honored during ceremonies on Wednesday evening.
The Amtahcha Awards were established in 2012 through a gift from Dr. Larry Feldman, founder of LaxPower.com, to the US Lacrosse Foundation.
Vocelka, a senior midfielder, is a two-time All-American and helped lead Georgia to a 14-3 record in the regular season. The Bulldogs won the Southeastern Women’s Lacrosse League title and secured the No. 2 seed for this week’s Division I national championship tournament in Round Rock, Texas.
Smith, a junior midfielder, is a three-time All-American and led Denver to an 11-4 record this season. She was also the Division II Rookie of the Year in 2016. The Pioneers are the two-time defending WCLA D-2 champs and are the top seed in the 2018 Division II championship tournament.
