Virginia Tech picked up its biggest victory of the season, edging No. 13 Denver 15-14 in overtime on freshman Sara Goodwin’s goal off a Taylor Caskey assist just over a minute into the extra session.

The Hokies improved to 6-4 and won their first game against a ranked opponent this season. It was the second straight year that Denver (7-2) lost to Tech.

The game featured five lead changes with neither team leading by more than two goals. The Hokies had a two-goal lead late, but Denver rallied to tie the game twice in the final 5:15, the last coming when Julia Feiss knotted it 14-14 with 3:57 left in regulation.

Emma Crooks had given Tech a 14-13 lead with 4:31 before Feiss tied the game. Crooks had four goals and two assists in the win, and also had eight draw control wins, including the one that gave Tech possession to start overtime.

“Emma Crooks was huge today,” said Virginia Tech head coach John Sung. “She kind of stepped up and became that person we need there right next to Paige (Petty). She won that draw in overtime which was crucial.”

Petty and Emma Harden each scored three goals for Virginia Tech. Quintin Hoch-Bullen (4g, 1a) and Kendra Lanuza (2g, 3a) each had five points for Denver and Feiss had a hat trick. Denver had assists on 10 of its 14 goals.
