Huge in-region matchups had significant effects on the latest Nike/USA Lacrosse High School Girls’ National Top 25.
A top-three showdown between St. Paul’s (Md.) and McDonogh (Md.) went to the top-ranked Gators, who remained unbeaten with a 17-8 win after bolting out to a 7-0 lead. Victor (N.Y.) made a huge 20-spot move after handing New Canaan (Conn.) its first loss in what’s been a promising start.
Big wins by Bryn Mawr (Md.) and Summit (N.J.) allowed them to climb, while Century (Md.) used two wins in a strong Maryland public school tournament to make its first appearance in the top 25.
Colorado Academy (Colo.) kept its perfect record and bumped into the top 25 after stopping the second-ranked West Region team, St. Ignatius Prep (Calif.). American Heritage-Delray (Fla.) also jumps by virtue of a strong showing against St. Paul’s (Md.) that looks better in hindsight and a win over a Bayport-Blue Point (N.Y.) team that has rattled off seven straight wins to return to the top 25.
To Victor goes the biggest positive gain of the week in the Northeast, as a win at New Canaan (Conn.) catapulted the Blue Devils into the region’s elite behind undefeated Northport (N.Y.) and Darien (Conn.). With big regional matchups coming up, especially in the two-day, seven-game Gains for Brains Tournament on Long Island this weekend, more movement is a strong possibility.
Mid-Atlantic saw wholesale changes in the second half of the top 10 with a familiar first four after St. Paul’s established its place at the top with a convincing win over McDonogh. Moorestown (N.J.) dropped out of the top 10 after it lost both games while adjusting to losing star Katie Buck to a knee injury. Bryn Mawr (Md.) picked up a win over Notre Dame Prep (Md.) to jump into the top 10 for the first time this season. Summit (N.J.) upended Oak Knoll (N.J.) to take over as the top Garden State team. NDP kept its place in the top 10 thanks to losses in the week for Episcopal (Pa.), Good Counsel (Md.) and Stone Ridge (Md.), and Century grabbed the final spot with a pair of high-intensity tournament wins.
The South Region enjoyed plenty of success last week. No teams changed in the rankings, with only one loss among all top-10 teams. American Heritage-Delray (Fla.), Steinbrenner (Fla.), Lake Highland Prep (Fla.), and Bartram Trail (Fla.) all claimed division or district championships.
New Trier (Ill.) takes over the top spot in the Midwest after edging Loyola Academy (Ill.) in a 1-2 matchup, just one of a number of moves in the region after last week. Upper Arlington (Ohio) climbed to fourth after running its start to 8-0, and Jackson (Ohio) picked up a big win over a previous unbeaten to vault three spots to sixth. Forest Hills Northern (Mich.) also played its way into the top 10 with impressive showings against a pair of in-state juggernauts.
In the West Region, Colorado Academy (Colo.) cemented its spot at the top with a win over No. 2 St. Ignatius Prep (Calif.). Another Colorado team, Valor Christian, made a big jump up to fourth after a strong victory. Torrey Pines (Calif.) is back on the strength of a six-game win streak, while Scripps Ranch (Calif.) fell after its 42-game win streak ended.
