Following the devastation of Hurricane Maria hitting Puerto Rico in 2017, grants and equipment supplied by US Lacrosse helped played a resurgence in the sport on the island, providing young players with a positive outlet.

“One of the biggest struggles that this hurricane left us with was living without electricity,” said Elliot Hernandez, who runs the Fundamentals Sports Camp for youth in Puerto Rico. “There were no cellphones, no technology. And the sports became essential to reunite families and serve as a distraction to all.”

More recently, US Lacrosse brought its Sankofa Clinic series to the island this summer, providing further exposure to the sport for the youth of Puerto Rico. Mikey Wallin of US Lacrosse was on-hand this summer to show what the sport means to Puerto Rico.
