Meanwhile, business is about to pick up in the Mid-Atlantic region, starting Tuesday with national No. 1 McDonogh (Md.) hosting No. 10 Haverford School (Pa.) and No. 13 Calvert Hall (Md.) hosting No. 17 Malvern Prep (Pa.).

Northeast Top 10 (Preseason)

1. St. Anthony’s (N.Y.)

When the Friars open March 28 at Manhasset (N.Y.), they will look to pick up where they left off when they won their final four games last year, including an 18-5 victory over rival Chaminade (N.Y.) in the CHSAA title game. They boast a strong senior class highlighted by midfielder Terrance Mooney (Penn).

2. Darien (Conn.)

The Blue Wave have won three straight state titles, including an 18-3 win over Simsbury (Conn.) in last season’s Class L state title game, and they enter this season on a 31-game win streak. Darien opens its season on April 1 with a home game against Yorktown (N.Y.). Kevin Lindley (Loyola) and Riley Stewart (Brown) are among the top returning players.

3.  Victor (N.Y.)

The Blue Devils have won 44 games in a row, including state championships in Class A and B over the past two seasons. This year will test how strong the foundation of Victor lacrosse is, after graduating an incredibly talented senior class. That class included two-time Nike/Lacrosse Magazine Northeast Player of the Year TD Ierlan (now a face-off specialist at Albany) and midfielder Jamie Trimboli (Syracuse).

4. Ward-Melville (N.Y.)

The Patriots fell 7-5 in last season’s Class A title game to Victor (N.Y.) and should be back in the hunt. Hofstra recruit Dominic Pryor (37 points) highlights a strong group of returners for W-M, which opens the season March 28 against Huntington (N.Y.).

5. Chaminade (N.Y.)

The Flyers lost their last three games of the 2016 season, including twice against rival St. Anthony’s, but they appear ready to get back on track. Face-off specialist Alessio Jack Giovanetti (Colgate), Matt Chmil (Duke), and Regan Quinn (Virginia) are among the standouts returning for Chaminade, which opens the season March 22 against Massapequa (N.Y.), followed by an early-season showdown against McDonogh (Md.) on March 25.

6.  Jamesville-DeWitt (N.Y.)

The Red Rams claimed their fifth Class B state title with a 9-6 decision over Yorktown (N.Y.) last year, and they have won 10 straight games entering the 2017 season. Ryan Archer (Hobart), son of J-D coach Jamie Archer, is one of the top returning scorers in New York after totaling 64 goals and 52 assists last year. J-D opens the season March 31 at Christian Brothers Academy (N.Y.).

7.  Syosset (N.Y.)

The Braves look to bounce back after falling 9-5 to Ward-Melville (N.Y.) in the Long Island Class A title game last year. Midfielder Matt Benus (Loyola), who had 26 goals and 14 assists, is among the top returning players for Syosset, which opens the season March 21 against Garden City (N.Y.).

8. Smithtown East (N.Y.)

East ended the 2016 season with a 13-12 overtime loss to Connetquot (N.Y.) in the Suffolk County (Section XI) Class A semifinals, but the Bulls return a ton of talent. Connor DeSimone (Johns Hopkins), Bobby Burns (Penn State), Mike Marino (Binghamton) and Luke Eschbach (Yale) form one of the strongest returning midfielder corps in the country. East opens the season March 25 at John Jay-Cross River (N.Y.).

9.  Cold Spring Harbor (N.Y.)

The Seahawks capped an impressive season with a 15-4 win over Penn Yan (N.Y.) in the Class C state title game. Ian Laviano (Virginia), Matt Licciardi (Cornell) and Taylor Strough (Fairfield) are among the returning midfielders who will lead the way as Cold Spring Harbor’s tough early-season schedule includes games with Smithtown West (N.Y.), Syosset (N.Y.), and New Canaan (Conn.).

10. New Canaan (Conn.)

The Rams won the Class M state title with a 13-2 win over Daniel Hand-Madison (Conn.). Goalie Drew Madison (Maryland), midfielder Ryan O’Connell (North Carolina) and attackman Jackson Appelt (Virginia) headline the returning players. New Canaan opens the season April 5 against Wilton (Conn.). Two days later, the Seahawks play Maryland powerhouse McDonogh.

Mid-Atlantic Top 10

1. McDonogh (Md.), 2-0

The Eagles started their season with a pair of convincing wins at the King of Spring Faceoff Classic in North Carolina. After a 23-5 blowout of Durham Academy (N.C.), they had a tougher time with one of the South’s top squads, Highland Park (Texas), on March 13. They erased an early deficit by scoring the final 12 goals in a 13-5 victory. Previous: 1

2. Bullis (Md.), 2-0

The Bulldogs are off to another strong start after breezing past Plano East (Texas) and St. Mary’s Ryken (Md.). Returning region Player of the Year Alex Trippi combined for five goals and six assists in the victories. A good test looms Friday when they host Gonzaga (D.C.). Previous: 2

3.  Landon (Md.), 2-0

Winter weather forced the Bears to wait eight days between their first two games, but they aced both tests. Joey Epstein piled up five goals and six assists in wins over Paul VI (Va.) and McCallie School (Tenn.). This is a big week with St. Mary’s Annapolis (Md.) and Brunswick School (Conn.) on the schedule. Previous: 5

4. Haverford School (Pa.), 0-0

The Fords dive right in this week, traveling to No. 1 McDonogh (Md.) on Tuesday and St. Paul’s (Md.) on Thursday before a Sunday home date with national No. 11 Culver Prep Academy (Ind.). All three matchups will challenge a talented defense led by Navy recruit Chris Morrison. Previous: 6

5. Boys’ Latin (Md.), 2-1

The Lakers started the season with two comfortable wins in Florida before tripping up Sunday with a 6-5 loss to Canadian powerhouse Hill Academy. The Pride scored the go-ahead goal with three minutes, 30 seconds left and held on. Yale recruit Matt Brandau had two goals and an assist in the loss. Previous: 4

6.  Gonzaga (D.C.), 3-1

The Eagles split at the annual Jesuit Lacrosse Classic in Texas over the weekend. They fell 11-10 to St. Ignatius Prep (Calif.) on Friday, squandering a late lead by ceding two goals in the final minute. They rebounded Sunday, overcoming a slow start to drop host Dallas Jesuit, 13-9, behind four goals and two assists from Jack Myers. Previous: 3

7. Calvert Hall (Md.), 2-0

The Cardinals started their spring March 11 in North Carolina at the King of Spring Faceoff Classic by handing South-ranked Lambert (Ga.) its first loss, 12-6. They followed the next day with an easy 17-1 victory over Greensboro Day (N.C.). North Carolina recruit Jacob Kelly is off to a nice start with three goals and nine assists. Previous: 7

8. Malvern Prep (Pa.), 0-0

As usual, the Friars have a good schedule to get them ready for Inter-Ac play. That road starts Tuesday with a trip to Calvert Hall (Md.). An offense led by Billy Coyle (Cornell) should be able to score with anybody. Previous: 8

The Green Wave is still a week out from their opener against West Morris Central (N.J.). When Chuck Ruebling’s club gets going, expect it to challenge for a repeat Tournament of Champions title with Matt Douglas (Lehigh) and Colin Crowley (Villanova) leading the way. Previous: 10

10.  St. Paul’s (Md.), 3-0

The Crusaders put their best foot forward on their spring break trip to California, tallying three wins over quality competition. They handed La Jolla (Calif.) and West-ranked Poway (Calif.) their first losses of the season before finishing with a 17-10 victory over St. Margaret’s Episcopal (Calif.). Monmouth-bound attackman Logan Posner led the charge, totaling 13 goals and three assists. Previous: NR

1. St. Thomas Aquinas (Fla.), 12-0

The defending FHSAA state champions continued their impressive run, picking up wins over previously ranked Barron Collier (Fla.) and St. Edward’s (Fla.). Jimmy Harrington led with six goals and one assist against Collier. The Raiders take their first trip north this week with games against Massepequa (N.Y.) and St. Dominic (N.Y.). Previous: 1

2. Highland Park (Texas), 5-1

The Scots were idle after their loss to national No. 1 McDonogh (Md.). They return to action with in-state games at Keller and Plano West this week, headed for an April 1 showdown with The Woodlands. Games with two other top Texas teams, Episcopal Dallas and Dallas Jesuit, are on the schedule later in April. Previous. 2

3.  Lambert (Ga.), 8-1
The Longhorns picked up two big wins last week, including a 17-3 win over Walton (Ga.) in the 11^th annual AJO4Lax Festival at Pope High School (Ga.). They also shut out Alpharetta (Ga.), 17-0. Previous: 3

4. The Woodlands (Texas), 13-0

The Highlanders finished their romp through California with a win over La Costa Canyon (Calif.). It was an impressive run for the Highlanders, who continue their road trip this week, except closer to home with two games in Texas. They are headed for an April 1 showdown with Highland Park. 5. Lassiter (Ga.), 5-1

The Trojans beat Harrison but suffered a 7-6 setback against perennial small-school power Westminster (Ga.). It was the lowest point total this season for Lassiter, which had four straight games scoring in double digits. Previous: 4 

6. Cardinal Gibbons (N.C.), 5-1

The Crusaders rebounded from their loss to Lambert at the King of Spring Classic with a 14-13 win over St. Anne’s-Belfield in Virginia. They next meet one-loss East Chapel Hill on Tuesday. Previous: 8

7. Jupiter (Fla.), 12-2

The Warriors make their debut in the rankings after picking up wins over St. Andrew’s (Fla.) and Lake Highland Prep (Fla.). Denver Aranda had five goals in the 14-9 win over LHP, while Ethan Randell made 15 saves. They also beat ranked Ponte Vedra (Fla.) earlier in the season. Previous: NR

8. Centennial (Ga.), 7-1

The Knights got a huge overtime win against Pope (Ga.) and then breezed past Allatoona (Ga.), landing them back in the top 10 after appearing earlier this season. Nicky Solomon had seven assists and six goals in the 23-10 win over Allatoona to put him at 200 career helpers. Centennial will be tested by a tough upcoming schedule that includes Lassiter, Oxbridge Academy (Fla.) and St. Andrew’s (Fla.). Previous: NR

9. Ponte Vedra (Fla.), 9-1

The Sharks were idle last week but face a tough slate this week with four games, including three against out-of-state opponents. They face Mountain Vista (Colo.), Wando (S.C.) and Charlotte Catholic (N.C.). Previous: 7

10. St. Andrew’s (Fla.), 12-3

The Scots lost to Jupiter — 10-9, despite 12 saves combined from Andrew Busel and Nick Ferraro — and fell to highly-touted Boys’ Latin (Md.) last week before rallying with a win against Lake Highland Prep (Fla.). Previous: 9

Midwest Top 10 (Preseason)

1. Culver Prep Academy (Ind.), 3-0

After overpowering then No. 8-ranked Carmel (Ind.) by a 19-6 margin on March 11, Culver Prep’s offense exploded in a 24-3 win over Louisville Trinity (Ky.) the next day. On March 18, the Eagles’ defense was steadfast in a 11-3 win over DeSmet Jesuit (Mo.). Wheaton Jackoboice tallied seven goals and eight assists through the first three games, while Alex Simmons had 10 goals and four assists. Previous: 1

2. Brother Rice (Mich.), 0-0

Brother Rice will look to see who on its roster can replace the state’s “Mr. Lacrosse” Morgan Mack on March 25 when the Warriors host New Trier (Ill.). Brother Rice is coming off a Michigan Division 1 state title in 2016. Previous: 2

3. MICDS (Mo.), 3-0

After a 2-0 start to the season, MICDS went on the road for the first time in 2017 and defeated Fort Zumwalt (Mo.) 21-7 on March 15. Harry Wellford has led MICDS with 12 goals and nine assists this season, while teammate Gaines Bundy has 11 tallies and six helpers. Previous: 3

4. Loyola Academy (Ill.), 0-0

Loyola Academy begins its defense of the Illinois state title on March 29 when it visits St. Laurence (Ill.). The contest at St. Laurence will be a tune-up for the Ramblers’ visit to the nation’s capital to take on Georgetown (Md.) on March 31 and Gonzaga (D.C.) on April 1. Previous: 4

5. Upper Arlington (Ohio), 0-0

Upper Arlington is hoping to continue its dominance of the Buckeye State when it begins its 2017 campaign at Thomas Worthington (Ohio). The Golden Bears return 11 seniors from last year’s state Division 1 title squad. Previous: 5

6. Cleveland St. Ignatius (Ohio), 1-0

St. Ignatius of Northeast Ohio topped St. Ignatius Prep of Illinois by a 9-4 margin on March 18. Michael Boehm made his mark on the match by tallying four goals for the Wildcats. Previous: 7

7. Cincinnati St. Xavier (Ohio), 0-0

St. Xavier was set to open its season Monday against crosstown rival Milford. The Bombers are hoping to avenge a disappointing finish in 2016 when they lost in the OHSAA regionals and missed a chance to defend their 2015 title. Previous: 9

8. Detroit Catholic Central (Mich.), 0-0

Detroit Catholic Central begins its 2017 campaign on Wednesday with a visit to Grosse Pointe South (Mich.). Detroit Catholic Central is coming off a 17-4 season after losing in the state finals to Brother Rice. Previous: 10

9. Carmel (Ind.), 2-2

After Carmel lost to the region’s No. 1 squad, Culver Academy (Ind.), the Greyhounds bounced back with an 11-4 win over Zionsville (Ind.) on March 13. Carmel then lost to unbeaten Louisville St. Xavier (Ky.) on March 18 before pulling out an overtime win over DeSmet Jesuit (Mo.) a day later. Chad Kittaka scored the game-winner over DeSmet Jesuit. 10. Fishers (Ind.), 5-0

Fishers is off to a surprising 5-0 start, winning all five games in nine days on home turf. But the Tigers have their biggest test yet as they will visit previously-ranked Cathedral (Ind.) on Tuesday. Cathedral opened with two losses to a pair of Kentucky teams. Previous: NR

1. Torrey Pines (Calif.), 5-0

Alderik Van der Heyde tallied three goals and three assists, and Makail Fraboni collected 11 saves to power the Falcons to a 9-7 win over also-ranked Loyola-Los Angeles (Calif.). Torrey Pines now has two wins over top 5 teams in the West after beating St. Ignatius (Calif.) the previous week. Previous: 1

2. St. Ignatius Prep (Calif.), 4-1

The Wildcats bounced back in a big way from their first loss of the season, scoring an 11-10 upset of national No. 6 Gonzaga (D.C.) at the Jesuit Lacrosse Classic in Dallas, Texas. Neither team ever had more than a two-goal lead, but Gonzaga was up 10-9 before Patrick Prosnan tied it with 51 seconds left and Payton St. Geme tallied the game-winner moments later. Ignatius had an easier time dispensing Dallas Jesuit the next day, winning 16-1. Previous: 3

3. Regis Jesuit (Colo.), 2-0

A big third quarter propelled the Raiders to a 14-11 win over Cherry Creek (Colo.), as they outscored the Bruins 6-2 to break a 5-5 halftime tie. Reed Babcock led the way with five goals and an assist, while Joe Kassal won 14 of 26 faceoffs and finished with nine groundballs and Braden Host registered 19 saves. Previous: 2

4. Poway (Calif.), 5-1

The Titans can’t be punished for a 9-6 loss to St. Paul’s (Md.). It was a close game throughout, and Poway trailed just one with 4:20 left with help from two Jack Woodard goals. They followed the loss with a 15-8 win over San Clemente (Calif.) Previous: 7

5. Loyola-Los Angeles (Calif.), 7-1

The Cubs won two games last week before suffering their first loss to Torrey Pines. They rallied from a 7-2 deficit midway through the third quarter to tie the game but couldn’t finish it off. Jonathan Partamian and Mason O’Hanlon each scored three goals to lead the Cubs in the loss. Previous: 4

6. Cherry Creek (Colo.), 2-1

The Bruins, a perennial state finalist, couldn’t avenge last year’s semifinal loss to Regis Jesuit, but they rebounded with a 13-6 win over Wheat Ridge (Colo.) on Friday. They get another test Tuesday when they host last year’s Class 5A runner-up, Arapahoe (Colo.). Previous: 5  

7. Monte Vista-Danville (Calif.), 7-1

After a pair of narrow wins, the Mustangs made last week’s games look easy. They beat winless Granada (Calif.) 26-1, then topped six-win Foothill (Calif.) 20-7. Attackman Hunter Perkins totaled three goals and 10 assists, and midfielder Chase Jolie had nine goals and seven assists on the week. Monte Vista closes March with three more games before its next big test April 3 against Poway (Calif.). Previous: 6

8. Bellevue (Wash.), 2-0

The Wolverines opened with an 11-9 win over Skyline (Wash.), before making a bit of a statement Friday with a 15-2 win over Issaquah (Wash.), the only in-state team to beat them last year. Matthew Marino led the way against Issaquah with five goals and two assists, while Paul Johnson added three goals and four assists. Previous: 8  

9. Arapahoe (Colo.), 1-0

The Warriors rallied in the second half to earn a 15-14 win over Mountain Vista (Colo.), the team they beat in the state semifinals last year en route to a Class 5A runner-up finish. Jake Hall finished with five goals and one assist, and Jackson Harvey won 17 of 27 faceoffs and collected 10 groundballs. Previous: 10

10. Corona del Mar (Calif.), 3-0

The Sea Kings picked up a pair of wins last week, most notably beating Foothill-Santa Ana (Calif.) 11-4 on Saturday, despite losing 14 of 18 faceoffs. They travel to Edison (Calif.) on Tuesday. Previous: 9
