Tommy Schelling went off for seven goals as Lehigh defeated Utah, 16-11. He scored his seventh for the final score with 27 seconds left.

Clinging to an 11-9 lead after Utah closed the third quarter with goals by Aaron Fjeldsted and Jimmy Perkins, Lehigh reclaimed a four-goal lead on tallies by Christian Mulé and Andrew Eichelberger. Mulé scored again for a 14-9 lead.

Lehigh narrowly outshot Utah (48-40), but dominated on the ground (51-35).

Maryland Survives

For three quarters, it appeared as if another top-five team would be upset by someone on the outskirts of the Nike/US Lacrosse Division I Men’s Top 20.

Until Maryland came alive.

The Terps scored six of the final seven goals in regulation, forcing overtime against Richmond with the score tied at 13. Both sides squandered looks in the first overtime, then Anthony DeMaio struck in the second overtime for No. 4 Maryland (2-0).

DeMaio’s five points were second to Logan Wisnauskas’ seven (three goals).

Tate Gallagher scored 35 seconds into the fourth quarter for Richmond, putting the Spiders ahead 12-7. Wisnauskas, John Geppert and Jack Brennan (twice) fueled a 4-0 run for Maryland, which cut the deficit to 12-11 when DeMaio assisted Brennan.

After Gallagher gave Richmond some breathing room at 13-11, Jared Bernhardt scored twice — the tying goal coming with 1:41 remaining in regulation.

Army Thumps UMass

Army, a rankings casualty because of Air Force’s big win over Duke last weekend, staked its claim for a higher rank with a convincing 17-4 win over No. 15 UMass. The Knights led 9-0 at halftime.

Brendan Nichtern’s four goals and three assists paced the potent Army attack. Sean O’Brien recorded a hat trick. Army actually lost the faceoff battle, 13-12.
