The regular season and conference tournaments are behind us, and what a treat they were.
We witnessed high level lacrosse, intense competition and multiple#SCTop10 plays all spring and can officially begin looking forward to the main event that we all love most — the NCAA tournament. Automatic bids have been secured and a final bracket has been formed, leaving us with a better idea of the paths each team will have to take before one is crowned the national champion.
Of the seeded teams, Stony Brook will have perhaps the most difficult path of all with the loaded teams of Towson, Drexel, Rutgers, Johns Hopkins, James Madison and North Carolina standing in their way to make it to Final Four weekend. Other seeded teams like Boston College and Northwestern have difficult roads, too. All in all, I think we could see some early upsets and bracket-buster games after the first weekend alone.
Before we get too deep into NCAA talk (that will come next week, I promise!), let’s take a look at the players who impressed in their postseason tourneys.
Taylor’s Top Five Players
Taryn Ohlmiller, Stony Brook
Ohlmiller has led the Seawolves from behind the cage all season long. She is a threat not only from behind the cage as a feeder, but she can command the offense as a dodger, too.
Her versatility as an attacker is what makes her so difficult to scout and contain. In Stony Brook’s America East championship tournament run, Ohlmiller had seven goals and six assists for the tournament and scored in a variety of ways. She is a gritty, veteran player looking to lead the Seawolves to another deep NCAA run as May progresses.
Bea Behrins, Denver
Behrins is the 2021 Big East attacker of the year — and for good reason.
In Denver’s games against Georgetown and UConn last weekend, she used her impeccable field vision and crafty stick to pick apart both zones with ease. Bea is such a smooth finisher, finding the back of the net three times on Thursday and once on Saturday in a variety of ways. Behrins looks to lead the Big East champion Pioneers to victories throughout the NCAA tournament and has the ability to make a huge impact on their run.
Brianna Harris, Florida
Harris is a player the Gators have relied on heavily over the years. She’s quick, strong, has a great stick and can make an impact all over the field consistently.
In Thursday’s game against Cincinnati, Harris scored only once, but she was able to assist her teammates in their own scoring five times throughout the match. On Saturday, it was the reverse. She had six goals along with four assists for the AAC champs. Her ability to draw multiple defenders’ eyes and use that to her advantage has helped Florida succeed this entire season.
Ally Diamond, Georgetown
Although Georgetown lost a heartbreaker to UConn in the semis on Thursday, Diamond did everything in her power to prevent that. With three goals, one assist, one ground ball and one caused turnover, she certainly made her mark on the game and gave everything she had.
Diamond caught my eye earlier in the season and continued to do so on Thursday because of her ability to dodge while also consistently looking to feed. She takes her shots and openings when they are there, but she is also someone who constantly looks to get others involved. Her selfless play all season long helped the Hoyas find success time and time again.
Jenny Kinsey, Jacksonville
Kinsey might not have been the leading scorer for Jacksonville during its ASun tournament championship run, but her tenacious play is one of the many reasons why the Dolphins won the title in the end.
She is a player who regularly makes the simple plays that either open up teammates or herself on the offensive end. Kinsey is a hard dodger who reads defenses very well and understands slides. She used her lacrosse IQ to her advantage time and time again as she scored six goals on the weekend.
