It was upset city in college women’s lacrosse on Saturday.
In the marquee game of the day, No. 11 Syracuse, a 2016 final four contender, upset No. 2 and reigning national champion North Carolina 13-11 in Chapel Hill, N.C.
"It was a great opportunity for us to show that we can pick it up a notch," said Syracuse coach Gary Gait. "We're just trying to get better every game. I thought our players came through today and made plays. It was two tough teams playing against each other and we were able to hang on and come out on top."
Syracuse scored the first four goals and never trailed for the remainder of the game. The Orange had a one-goal advantage in each half to secure the two-goal victory.
Freshman attacker Emily Hawryschuk had a team-best four goals and redshirt freshman midfielder Cara Quimby led with a team-best three assists. Senior Devon Parker, junior Neena Merola and sophomore Natalie Wallon had two goals apiece.
Syracuse snapped North Carolina’s 18-game winning streak against ACC opponents. The last time the Tar Heels lost to a conference rival was against the Orange in the 2015 ACC Tournament championship.
"Syracuse played with more energy than we did today," North Carolina coach Jenny Levy said. "We kept turning the ball over at inopportune times and really hurt ourselves. Syracuse played great today, and we made it worse with turnovers and uncharacteristic mistakes."
Senior attacker Molly Hendrick led North Carolina with three goals and three assists, followed by junior midfielder Ela Hazar who recorded two goals and two assists. Senior midfielder Sammy Jo Tracy had three points.
North Carolina and Syracuse are now tied for the top seed in the ACC.
Fortunato Tallies 300th Career Point
No. 12 Notre Dame 13, No. 20 Virginia Tech 9
On Notre Dame’s senior day, senior Cortney Fortunato scored her second goal and recorded her 300th career point at the 13:46 mark in the second period to tie the game 7-7 and lead the Irish past ACC foe Virginia Tech 13-9.
After leading by just one goal at halftime, Notre Dame won the second half 8-5 for the four-goal victory. Fortunato (three goals, one assist) tied Casey Pearsall (one goal, three assists) for a team-high four points. Grace Muller also tallied a hat trick.
“She’s a stud,” Pearsall said of Fortunato. “I love that girl. She works so hard, and it all shows on the field.”
Notre Dame won the draw battle 13-11, as well as the ground ball battle 31-21.
Virginia Tech was led by Marissa Davey on four points and Zan Biedenharn on three goals.
Virginia Rebounds From First-Half Deficit
No. 14 Virginia 11, No. 19 Louisville 7
No. 14 Virginia held No. 19 Louisville to just one goal in the second to overcome a one-goal halftime deficit and win 11-7.
“This is a huge win for us,” Virginia coach Julie Myers said. “We are here at home and coming down the stretch we want to go in hot to the ACC Tournament. We needed another ACC win, so I definitely looked at this game as a must-win. The girls rose to the challenge today. It wasn’t a perfectly played game, but they grinded it out and made just enough opportunities go their way.”
Besser Dyson led the Cavaliers with five points on fur goals and one assist, while Maggie Jackson had a hat trick and one assist. Kasey Behr, Sammy Mueller and Avery Shoemaker tallied two goals apiece.
Cornell Holds Off Dartmouth
No. 8 Cornell 14, Dartmouth 12
After falling to unranked Albany on Tuesday, No. 8 Cornell got another scare. Trailing by three at the 10:13 mark in the first half, the Big Red scored four straight goals to lead Ivy foe Dartmouth 9-8 at halftime.
To open the second period, the Big Green score three consecutive goals to regain the lead before Cornell finished with a 5-1 run to top Dartmouth 14-12.
Amie Dickson had a team-high six points (six goals, one assist) for Cornell, while Sarah Phillips (one goal, three assists) and Catherine Ellis (three goals, one assist) had four points apiece.
Dartmouth commanded the draw, 17-11, and won the ground ball battle 18-15. Courtney Weisse led the Big Green with five goals and an assist.
Savitcheff Scores Last-Second Game-Winner
Albany 9, New Hampshire 8
After scoring two goals in the final 18 seconds to upset No. 8 Cornell 11-10 on Tuesday, Dakotah Savitcheff did it again, scoring a free position goal with 18 seconds left on the clock to lead Albany to a 9-8 win over New Hampshire.
Emma Powlin led the Great Danes with six points on two goals and four assists, while Sarah Martin tallied a hat trick plus an assist. Savitcheff finished with two goals on the day.

East Stroudsburg Upsets Mercyhurst
No. 20 East Stroudsburg 16, No. 11 Mercyhurst 10
Junior midfielder Chessie Rahmer scored five goals and freshman goalie Tatyana Petteway, the PSAC leader in save percentage, recorded 22 saves to lead East Stroudsburg to a 16-10 upset win over No. 11 Mercyhurst. The Warriors never trailed, had a five-goal lead at halftime, and led by as many as nine goals in the second half.

No. 4 Middlebury junior midfielder Hollis Perticone scored with 2:37 left in double overtime to drop a 10-9 upset victory over No. 1 Trinity, earning the top seed in the NESCAC Tournament. The Panthers overcame a one-goal halftime deficit with a 6-5 second period and are now 7-1 in the conference. Mary O’Connell led Middlebury with five points on three goals and two assists, while Emma McDonagh had a team-best four goals.
In other Division III upset news, No. 19 Wesleyan stunned No. 10 Bowdoin 14- 7, marking its first win over the Polar Bears since 2009. Meredith Smith led Wesleyan with four goals and an assist.
