Syracuse Takes Down Northwestern in Dome
A game that once seemed in hand, seemed lost until Megan Carney’s late goal forced overtime and then Emily Hawryschuk delivered the game-winner as No. 8 Syracuse beat previously unbeaten Northwestern 15-14.
For most of the afternoon on Sunday, Syracuse held the lead on No. 7 Northwestern (3-1), but that quickly evaporated as the Wildcats strung together five straight goals in the second half. Northwestern took a 14-12 lead on Selena Lasota’s goal with 7:05 remaining.
Sierra Cockerille pulled the Orange (4-1) to within 14-13 with 5:18 to play, but Northwestern goalie Julie Krupnick continued to foil the Syracuse offense. Krupnick made two more saves down the stretch, keeping the Wildcats in front by one until Carney, a freshman from Texas, scored the game-tying goal with just 25 seconds left after a Northwestern shot clock violation.
Northwestern won the draw to start overtime, but Wildcats star Selena Lasota was hounded by multiple Syracuse defenders and Sam Swart forced a turnover. Krupnick made her 14th save on Syracuse’s first shot in overtime, but the Orange retained possession and Hawryschuk ripped a laser from outside for the game-winner.
Hawryschuk led Syracuse with four goals, Swart scored three times and Nicole Levy had two goals and three assists in the Orange’s first of five straight games against ranked opponents.
Ten different players scored goals for Northwestern, with Lauren Gilbert, Lasota, Linssey McKone and Izzy Scane each scoring twice.
Shane Leads Michigan Past No. 15 Colorado
Michigan goalie Mira Shane continued her red hot start to the season as the Wolverines stayed unbeaten with an 8-6 victory over No. 15 Colorado.
Shane made 17 saves, one off her season-best of 18 set last weekend against Dartmouth, to help Michigan improve to 5-0. In those five victories, Shane has made 48 saves while allowing just 30 goals, giving her a 61.5 save percentage.
Caitlin Muir had a goal and three assists on Michigan’s first five goals, helping the Wolverines move out to a 7-3 halftime lead. Lilly Grass scored Michigan’s only second half goal, but Shane made the early lead stand up, making nine second half saves.
Muir’s four points led Michigan and Grass scored two goals. Samantha Nemirov scored twice for Colorado and Julia Lisella made eight saves.
