What’s a Sunday slate without a little excitement? There were just four Division I men’s games on the schedule, but it was ripe with storylines to follow.
UTAH STUNS JACKSONVILLE
Unranked Utah got a career-high four goals with two assists from Tyler Bradbury and held No. 8 Jacksonville scoreless for close to 25 minutes in a 16-10 win in the Jacksonville Lacrosse Classic.
MJ McMahon added two goals and three assists for Utah (3-1), which also got 10 saves from Zio Dechesere. Cole Brams won 18 of 29 faceoffs.
Jacksonville (5-2) stormed out of the gates like a team that has taken down NCAA heavyweights in Duke and Denver. Four goals from four scorers — Jack Dolan, Jack heed, Tyler Corpora and Jeremy Winston — put the Dolphins ahead 4-0 in less than seven minutes.
Utah answered, and McMahon ended the first quarter with two straight goals, tying the score at 5. The Utes then scored the only goal of the second quarter — an unassisted tally by Bradbury — and the first two goals of the third quarter to take an 8-5 lead.
Nearly 25 minutes elapsed between Jacksonville goals, a length of time snapped when Jackson Intrieri scored with 9:04 left in the third quarter.
Jacksonville kept it close for a few more minutes, with Winston’s goal putting the Dolphins down 9-8 with 4:56 left in the third quarter, but Utah responded with another 5-0 run to put the game away.
SYRACUSE WINS KRAUS-SIMMONS TROPHY
Syracuse snapped a three-game losing streak and made sure the Kraus-Simmons Trophy stays in Syracuse for the next year with an 18-16 win over No. 18 Hobart in the Carrier Dome.
No. 14 Syracuse got five goals apiece from Tucker Dordevic (who added two assists) and Brendan Curry (who had one assist). Harrison Thompson made his first start of the season and made eight saves, and Bobby Gavin came on in relief to make three saves.
Though the game was close throughout, Syracuse took the lead for good on Dordevic’s goal with 2:56 remaining in the second quarter. Mikey Berkman (two goals) followed with a goal just over a minute later, then Curry scored 43 seconds after that for a 10-7 lead.
Hobart’s Bobby Baltzer later cut the deficit to 12-11, but Berkman and Curry again scored consecutive goals to regain a little breathing room.
John Herlihy made things interesting late, scoring with 36 seconds left to put Hobart (2-2) down 17-16. Curry scored 24 seconds later to ice the rivalry win for Syracuse (2-3).
