Syracuse opened Atlantic Coast Conference play by controlling Virginia Tech from start to finish, beating the Hokies 18-8 in The Crown Classic in Charlotte. The Orange (7-1, 1-0 ACC) have now won six straight games.

Virginia Tech (7-2, 1-1 ACC) had no answers for Syracuse’s powerful offense and had its six-game winning streak snapped.

An early three-goal run put the Orange up 4-1 just over 10 minutes into the game and Virginia Tech trailed the rest of the way. Syracuse had four runs of it least three goals in the game.

Emily Hawryschuk paced the Orange offense with seven points (4g, 3a) and Meaghan Tyrrell also added four goals. Syracuse defender Sarah Cooper had four caused turnovers, helping to shut down the Hokies and force them into 17 turnovers.

Sarah Lubnow was the only Virginia Tech player with multiple goals, scoring twice. Angie Benson made 10 sves.

Sizzling Start Carries Stony Brook

No. 5 Stony Brook scored seven goals in the first 7:16 of the game and rode that hot start to beat No. 14 Princeton 18-12 on Sunday on Long Island.

After the Seawolves start, Princeton scored six of the next eight goals to get back into striking distance at 9-6 with 6:48 left in the first half, but Stony Brook (4-1) finished the half strong, taking a 12-7 halftime lead on Kailyn Hart’s goal with just 11 seconds left.

Princeton got to within four goals on two separate occasions in the second half, but Stony Brook blanked the Tigers for the final 17:33 of the game to seal the win.

Stony Brook senior Ally Kennedy was dominant, scoring a season-high six goals, including five in the first half. More importantly, she grabbed 15 draw controls, just one away from the school record.

Stony Brook junior Jesse Arline, making her first start of the season, had a career-best four goals to aid the Seawolves.

Sophomore goalie Kameron Halsall made 12 saves to earn the win.

Kyla Sears had goals for the Tigers (3-2) and Sam Fish made 11 saves.

• Izzy McMahon scored five goals as No. 8 USC beat Cal 16-9 to complete a weekend sweep of its Northern California Pac-12 rivals. The Trojans are now 6-0, 2-0 in the Pac-12.

• Carolina Wiseman scored six goals as No. 18 Denver handled Fairfield, 21-11. It’s the third time this season Denver topped 20 goals.

• Penn State’s Lauren Craft scored four goals and the Nittany Lions held off Vanderbilt 14-13 as a Vandy shot hit off the post with 36 seconds left in regulation. Gwyn Devin led Vandy with five goals.

• Ashley Laing made her 10th save of the game with 11 seconds left to secure UC Davis' 15-14 upset victory over Georgetown. Mar Alvear scored the game-winning goal with 3:57 left and Alex Agnew paced the Aggies with four goals.

• Charlie Rudy tied a Colorado record with eight goals, on just nine shots, as the Buffs beat Coastal Carolina 19-8.

• Belle Martire scored just 31 seconds into the game and finished with nine overall as William & Mary edged George Washington 19-17.
