What a week for Stony Brook.

The No. 19 Seawolves picked up their third win in six days — two of them against Top 20 teams — with a 12-10 victory over No. 16 USC on Sunday on Long Island.

Stony Brook, which won at Johns Hopkins on Tuesday and against league rival Albany on Friday, raced out to an early 4-0 lead only to see USC score the final five goals of the first half to knot the score 6-6 at the half.

USC’s Kelsey Huff scored less than a minute into the second half to push the Trojans’ scoring run to six straight goals and give USC its first lead of the game.

Stony Brook’s Nicole Barretta ended a 16-plus minute scoring drought for the Seawolves, tying the game 7-7 with 24:26 left in the second half.

Ally Kennedy restored the Stony Brook lead with 20:47 to play and then assisted on Siobhan Rafferty’s goal and added another of her own to complete a four-goal run that gave Stony Brook a 10-7 lead with 18:27 left.

USC got back within a goal twice, the last on Huff’s goal with 2:01 to play that made the score 11-10, but Kennedy sealed the victory when she beat a double team and raced to an open net and scored with 1:43 left.

Kennedy had five goals in the victory, Rafferty had three and Anna Tesoriero made 11 saves to register the win for Stony Brook (10-4).

Emily Concialdi and Huff each had three goals for USC (13-3).

JMU Beats Hofstra in Double OT Thriller

The battle for first place in the Colonial Athletic Association lived up to the expectations with No. 11 James Madison winning a 9-8 double overtime thriller at Hofstra.

A four-goal second-half run gave Hofstra a 7-5 lead before the Dukes strung together three straight goals in a span of just 2:22 to take an 8-7 lead on Maddie McDaniels’ goal with 4:04 left.

JMU goalie Molly Dougherty made three saves down the stretch, but Hofstra finally broke through with Arianna Esposito scoring a free position goal with 26 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game to overtime.

Neither team scored in the first six minutes of overtime and Hofstra goalie Jess Smith made her third OT save early in the second overtime to give the ball to the Pride, but JMU’s Carolina Sdanowich drew a charge on the other end to return possession back to the Dukes.

JMU’s Hanna Haven found McDaniel inside and she got free in the middle of traffic to score the game-winner for the Dukes (12-3, 4-0 CAA).

“Today was a huge character win,” said JMU head coach Shelley Klaes-Bawcombe. “I feel like we came in and stole this game from Hofstra. They beat us in nearly every category, except for shooting percentage and saves.”

Haven had two goals and three assists for JMU and McDaniel and Katie Checkosky each scored two goals. Dougherty made 16 saves in the victory.

Hofstra (9-5, 2-1 CAA) was led by Alyssa Parrella with two goals and an assist and Amanda Guerra and Esposito each scored twice. Smith made nine saves.

Quick Start Powers Notre Dame Over Duke

Andie Aldave scored the first three goals of the game to ignite a 6-0 run to start the game and No. 6 Notre Dame cruised to a 15-7 victory at No. 12 Duke.

Maddie Howe’s fake flip led to the 10th goal of the game for the Irish, giving Notre Dame a 10-4 advantage late in the first half.

Duke fought back with goals by Katie Cronin and Catherine Cordrey to cut it to a 10-6 Notre Dame lead at the half, but the Blue Devils scored just once in the second half.

Aldave had a team-high six points (4g, 2a) to lead Notre Dame (13-2, 5-2 ACC) and got help from Samantha Lynch (4g, 1a), Nikki Ortega (1g, 4a) and Howe (3g).

A showdown between the top two teams in the country in draw controls went to Notre Dame’s favor by a 16-7 count. Savannah Buchanan had eight draw controls.

Charlotte North led Duke (9-6, 2-4 ACC) with three goals.

UMass Wins Atlantic 10 Regular Season Title

Kaitlyn Cerasi scored the game-winning goal as Massachusetts beat Richmond 13-12 in overtime to claim the Atlantic 10 regular season title. UMass improved to 13-3 and 8-0 in the A-10, and gained a measure of revenge against the Spiders. Richmond defeated UMass in last year’s A-10 championship game.

The game featured six lead changes with Richmond taking its final lead at 11-10 on Madison Ostrick’s goal with 13:10 left.

Cassidy Doster scored back-to-back goals to swing the lead back to UMass, but the Spiders tied it up 12-12 on Katie Sciandra’s sixth goal of the game with 9:13 left in regulation.

UMass goalie Lauren Hiller made three saves in the final three minutes of the second half, the last coming with under 20 seconds to play to send the game to overtime.

Caitlyn Petro won the draw to start overtime and just over a minute into extra time, Cerasi scored the game-winner off a feed from Stephanie Croke.

Cerasi paced the offense with four goals and three assists and Hiller made 17 save to earn the win. UMass had a 19-8 advantage on the draw with Petro claiming a game-high seven.

Sciandra’s six goals led Richmond (13-3, 6-2 A-10) and Sam Geiersbach had a hat trick.
