It’s been a brick-by-brick type of season for Rutgers, and the Scarlet Knights laid the latest brick in the foundation Sunday afternoon against Maryland.
While honoring its six seniors on Senior Day, Rutgers earned its first-ever win against Maryland on the strength of four goals and one assist from Taralyn Naslonski and two goals and three assists from Cassidy Spilis. Sophia Cardella made 10 saves in the 16-14 win that came down to the wire.
Rutgers (5-7) held an 8-4 lead at halftime, but Maryland (7-5) was far from finished. The Terps rallied back, eventually tying the score at 9 on one of Brindi Griffin’s four goals.
Now with 18:45 left, Rutgers took control. The Scarlet Knights scored seven straight, starting with Ashley Campo’s score on an assist from Jenna Byrne. Naslonski, Spilis and Ashley Moynahan each scored twice during the 7-0 run that made the score 16-9 with 8:59 left.
Maryland scored the final five goals of the game, but a long Rutgers possession with less than two minutes left helped burn enough clock for Maryland’s comeback attempt to fall short.
Rutgers is now firmly in the mix in the Big Ten after earning its first-ever wins against Johns Hopkins, Penn State and Maryland this spring. Every Big Ten team makes the postseason tournament.
Ali Baiocco Wins it for Stanford
Ali Baiocco scored eight times, the last of which coming with just about 16 seconds remaining, as No. 16 Stanford came back to defeat USC 16-15 in Southern California. Stanford is 8-0 for the first time since 2011.
Baiocco and Izzy McMahon of USC went shot-for-shot for most of the afternoon, as McMahon scored six goals and helped USC hold a 15-14 lead with 3:35 remaining. But Baiocco took control from there, tying the score at 15 with 2:07 left before netting the game-winner in the waning seconds.
Drexel Continues CAA Dominance
Colleen Grady had three goals and two assists and Karson Harris scored four times as No. 15 Drexel earned a 15-11 win over Hofstra to stay undefeated in CAA play. Drexel (11-1, 3-0 CAA) got seven saves from Zoe Bennett.
