Notre Dame goalie Bridget Deehan dominated the first half, but possession after possession for the Orange eventually became too much for the Irish defense to withstand. No. 2 Syracuse completed a weekend sweep of No. 3 Notre Dame, winning Sunday’s game 15-12 despite falling behind 7-2 in the first half.
Syracuse sophomore Katelyn Mashewske keyed the victory, registering a career-best 13 draw controls to help the Orange to a 22-7 advantage. Mashewske had just 11 draw controls for the season coming into the weekend, but had 12 in the 18-14 victory on Thursday and followed it up with a dominating performance in the circle on Sunday.
Deehan made seven first half saves to help the Irish click early, but Syracuse scored twice in the final two minutes of the first half to cut the Notre Dame lead to 7-4 and gain some momentum.
The momentum snowballed in the second half with Syracuse eventually scoring eight straight goals to take a 10-7 lead on Megan Carney’s goal with 23:06 to play.
Notre Dame answered with back-to-back goals from Maddie Howe and Kelly Denes to pull within a goal with 18:13 left, but Syracuse ripped off four straight goals in a span of less than two minutes to take control.
Carney had four goals and an assist for the Orange while sisters Meaghan Tyrrell and (3g, 3a) and Emma Tyrrell (3g, 1a) combined for 10 points. Asa Goldstock made 11 saves.
Howe paced the Notre Dame offense with three goals and an assist while Madison Ahern, Samantha Lynch and Jackie Wolak each scored twice. Deehan finished with 14 saves.
Syracuse (5-0, 3-0 ACC) is 5-0 for the first time since the 2017 team opened the season 7-0. Notre Dame fell to 2-2, 0-2 ACC.
