It was a short slate of seven Division I men’s games on Sunday, but several results are worth noting.
DENVER REBOUNDS DAY AFTER LOSS
Less than 24 hours after a two-goal loss to Jacksonville, Denver played host to Canisius. The Griffs kept it close for a half, trailing the Pios by just one at halftime, but they couldn’t hang with the No. 15 team in the nation.
Denver (3-2) outscored Canisius (1-3) 13-3 in the second half of a 20-9 win at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium. JJ Sillstrop and Noah Manning each had three goals and one assist, and 10 Pios scored in the win.
Colin Kelly and Jacob Buck scored consecutive goals for Canisius in the second quarter that tied the score at 6. Sillstrop scored a few minutes before halftime for a 7-6 Denver lead, and the Pios came out of the half by scoring the first eight goals of the third quarter.
GRAY’S SEVEN GOALS PACE UNC OVER HOPKINS
Chris Gray was a one-man wrecking crew against No. 9 Johns Hopkins, scoring seven goals with two assists in a 15-10 win for No. 13 North Carolina at Dorrance Field. Nicky Solomon had three goals and three assists, and Joey Epstein scored four times for Hopkins (3-2).
North Carolina (4-1) never trailed. Johns Hopkins tied the score at 5 on Garrett Degnon’s goal with nine minutes left in the second quarter, but Gray scored 45 seconds later to give his side a lead it wouldn’t relinquish.
